Elementary question on Camo Semiautomatic

My son bought a Super Black Eagle 3 that has factory camo. He decided to sell it at what I considered too low of a price, therefore, I'm the new owner . Never had a camo gun, so I'm asking about cleaning. I always cleaned my regular gun using a light coating of oil. Is this necessary on this type of gun?

My Benelli Super Vinci gets wiped down with a very light coat of REM oil or CLP but I am hunting either the Eastern Shore of Chesapeake Bay or New Jersey salt marshes. Salt is nasty on metal even if it is coated.

Just don't use Gun Scrubber or similar, it will strip the camo right off and you'll be left with a white shotgun.... Don't ask me how I know

If you hunt with it in warmer weather, don't let your insect repellent get on there either.

Ballistol is a pretty good lubricant and cleaner. (Apologies to friends that think it’s the best thing invented since electricity) Its not the “best” in my opinion, but it is the best for fine fishing tackle and plastic dipped guns. It eats nothing plastic. Not nylon gears, not oil finish, not painted on camo patterns.

Highly recommended choice when you really want to “do no harm”.

Do not oil the camo.

On camo guns that Benelli makes, I do not put ANYTHING on the camo parts of the shotgun, only the internal parts. No problems in about 20 years of waterfowl and dove hunting.

As stated in the posts above, two big things to avoid are Gun Scrubber and insect repellent. They will ruin the camo. It has always been my understanding it is the repellents containing DEET.

Contrary to the prior post, I have a Super Eagle 2 turkey gun with the camo pistol grip stock. I just used it for turkey a week ago in light rain/snow. I've always thrown a light coat of rem oil on before putting back in the safe and never had any issues

I’ve got a Benelli super vinci as well… I typically don’t oil the externals… but on the rare occasion I do it’s either with rem oil or ballastol…

The gun is about 6 years old now, has had a few thousand shells through it… has hunted everything from squirrels in Arkansas to waterfowl in Alaska… and has had the externals oiled / cleaned probably a dozen times at this point… the camo still looks as good as the day I brought it home from Gander Mountain (bought it when they went bankrupt and everything in the store was on sale…)
