During a recent cruise to Svalbard bear guides from Hapag Lloyd Cruises were forced to shoot a Polar Bear that attacked one of the crew (the man suffered head injuries and required airlifting to the hospital but is making recovery). The attack happened when the crew were escorting tourists. In a typical loonie, distant from reality response the ecoterrorists are now attacking the cruise company.

In Svalbard one is not legally allowed to be outdoors without a firearm due to high number of these predators. Bears are protected and any bear shootings are investigated but the authorities said they would rather be investigating bear shootings than human deaths.

Naturally loonies don't get it.

Curious, I thought Polar Bears like Elephants and Lions were extinct - that's what ecoterrorists would have you believe anyway.

Their all nuts. Don’t shoot the bear!! Let him kill the man! Fking idiots.

I’d like to see the change in their viewpoint if they were on the receiving end of a predator attack. Naturally this is unlikely to ever happen as there are very few predators in the centres of large cities where this lot spends all of their time.

Apparently Bella is 15 years old from London England. This kind of thinking is what can be expected from someone who is urban and completely disconnected with the environment and wildlife. I applaud her attempt to try to "care" and be involved, but a few more hours in Biology class and perhaps Social studies might be enlightening for her.
I can only hope that she will develop a broader sense of reality and a true environmental awareness as her brain finishes its final growth period.

AND these bears are very particular about WHAT they bite!!!

Silly girl. She is clueless as to what happens outside her street!

See a young girl saying things like this I can understand, but if you look at what smart things people who responded to her have to say it gets really annoying. One of them appears to be shocked that a huge predator can just appear out of nowhere and surprise its victim. Guess how they manage to kill their prey geniuses!

@BRICKBURN - the reality is we have gotten so wealthy and so specialized that it has served to divorce people from the requirements of the physical world. Not everyone, of course, but certainly everyone who doesn't understand what it takes to actually put food on the table.

I read an article by a former vegan not so very long ago. She was going all in with veganism, to the point of growing her own garden (large enough to cover her food requirements nearly completely) so she could be sure no animals were harmed in the production of her food. Then she got the soil report back from the state ag extension service, which advised the addition of lots and lots of bone meal to improve her soil. Buying and adding the bone meal made her squeamish, but she did it and trooped on with it. Then she started growing food, noticing how much of her effort was being consumed in order to keep arthropods, birds, and rodents happy and fed. She finally figured out that in order for some animals to eat, other animals have to die. It is the way of things. We all here understand this. Many people, perhaps even most people, in the 1st world do not appear to understand it.

Being norwegian, there is some justification in the critic...not the fact that the bear was shot in self defence but in wich way tourism should be allowed in these areas..

It is a sad fact that polar bears are on decline due to climate change and taking more and more people onshore there may not be the smartest move..

Amigo, there is no global warming, and polar bear populations are not in decline.

Since the end of the Pleistocene (the last ice age), seas have risen about 100 meters, or an average of about 1 meter per century. In 10,000 years, there were probably centuries that saw 5 meters of sea level rise, and multiple centuries with no sea level rise. The last time I read anything about it, the AGW crowd was predicting something like a meter over the next century, give or take a little. That doesn't fall outside of natural variability and cannot possibly be attributed to mankind. And the plain truth is that we have not had any warming in almost 20 years.

I live in Houston, Texas, one of the warmest places in the US. We got 2 separate snow events last winter, one of which was in early December, so technically a show even in late Fall and a snow event in Winter. We average a single snow event about every 10 years. We've had several in the last decade, enough that if we didn't get any snow again in the next 50 years, we would still be at "average."

The most compelling evidence I have seen for the cause of climate variability was described by a Danish physicist named Henrik Svensmark. If youtube hasn't pulled them down, he had 6 or 8 hours worth of video describing his observations. You might also read Lord Christopher Monckton and watch a few of his videos. I have corresponded with Lord Monckton, and he is a genuinely nice fellow.

Love your rifle! I'm needing a heavier rifle for Africa. Sold my .375 Dakota Safari several trips ago. Would you have any interest in a trade of some sort involving the custom 338/06 I have listed here on the site ( I have some room on my asking price. I also have a large quantity of the reloading components and new Redding dies as well as a box of A-Square Dead Tough ammo.
