Cost to import two crates from RSA to Ohio

@wesheltonj , did they give you a breakdown on how they got it all the way up to $600+? Especially just on your 4 animals.
Does it make any difference if it’s dip&pack, European mounts of finished taxidermy?
Yes, unfortunately, its chargeable weight which is includes volume. So you're getting billed for crate and crate size. The chargeable weight was 196Kg, the gross weight was 75Kg. This was dip and ship. The bigger the crate the more expensive it will be. Turkish was only $1,060.36 from Zagreb. Clearing was twice the cost of air freight.

I have a crate coming from Tanzania in January or February. I will be calling Coppersmith then and find out which airport is not charging the outrageous USDA fee and shipping to that airport.

When shipping prices seem to have stabilized a bit they hit us with this crap!
Not sure how they can justify charging volumetric weight on a crate when all’s that they will probably do is open it up and look inside, after all of the other inspections.

SCI Legal should be all over this......

$639 for USDA inspection? I thought the USDA inspection is free up to 5 trophies and then $5 for each additional animal after that.
Currently only DFW. But soon expanding to others.

I was charged $100 USDA inspection going through Atlanta and Chicago earlier this year. Although, I had way more animals and 193KG. If it was free for the first 5 animals and $5 for each after it should have been around $60 or so.

The new policy you listed at DFW feels like extortion. They are basically just trying to get in on the airline holding fee extortion rates like the airlines have started doing. Everyone has their hand out and everyone is trying to milk the consumer for every dollar they have.

I looked back at my last bill from 2022, USDA/APHIS was $45 for the first 4 and $3 for each additional trophy. Guess just wishful thinking.

Like @wesheltonj , I had a small crate come through DFW a few weeks ago. It had (1) klippie full mount, (1) buffalo euro, (1) zebra rug and leather I had made from my buffalo. Total weight was 55kg and just the crate was about half of that weight. As you can see from the invoice, I was charge $364.50(exam+delivery to exam).

Just another reason not to bring anything else home from now on.

This feels so much more gross because we already pay them to do this service with taxes. And it has always been a nominal fee. And now they want to abuse people and raise the fees by many hundred % increase.

It also feels stupid and inefficient because instead of sending one person around to inspect crates as they move through the already designed system, all the crates now need to move to an additional location and bottleneck there.
