So, I ordered two boxes of Hornady Outfitter .338WM ammo from Optics Planet back in February for $87/box. First, the delivery time was 14-24 days. A week later, I received an email stating they were on backorder with no time set for delivery. I just checked the order today. The NEW order was for ONE box at $101.99, set for delivery 5/30. Can they do that as it seems illegal? Has anyone else experienced this bait and switch tactic from them? I've never bought anything from them before. Needless to say, I cancelled the order and the customer service rep I spoked to seemed confused and more than willing to cancel the order. Really weird?
BTW, AmmoSeek sent me to them in the first place.

Wow! Im really surprised to hear that..

I've ordered from Optics Planet for years (typically once or twice a year).. and never had a single issue with them..

Im hoping this turns out to be an anomaly of some sort..

My biggest issue with them of late (and why I probably havent bought anything from them in a year or more).. is they never seem to have what I am looking for in stock anymore.. but.. thats not untypical for pretty much everyone these days...

I wouldn't be opposed to buying from them again, but I just thought ordering two boxes of ammo for a lower price and then the order is now for one box at a much higher cost was really strange? Never experienced that before.

Sounds like you got the Optics Planet Special. They show everything in stock but in reality they have to order it from the wholesaler after you order it and half the time they can't get. Been operating like that for a decade. Never again for me

They are a good company. I buy a lot from them. You nailed the key watch out. If they do not have what I want and it goes to back order I immediately call them and say no to this

As Midwest said, I hope this is an anomaly and due to these crazy times.

I have always had good experiences with Optics Planet. I can say a couple of times I got a little too technical for the customer service ladies and they transferred me to a technician, we sorted though my questions and I was able to get the correct item I required, not the item I thought would do the job.

This was about 4 or 5 years ago and only once did I have to wait on a back order. I was notified about a week or so my back order was in stock, no price change, completed the order for shipment and it arrived about 3 or 4 days later, with no problems.

Well, in all actuality, I figured the "backorder" would be the norm. But, I never expected one box of ammo at a much higher price would have been substituted for the two boxes I originally ordered at the lower price. I had to do a double take when I pulled up the order today looking for a second box? I've never experienced that before. Good thing I checked today. Caveat emptor!

i ordered a rifle stock, calling them and telling the person exactly what i wanted and was assured they had it, bang money off my card. well wrong stock sent and i called and was assured when they got the first stock back they would send the right stock(again telling them what i wanted), well they sent me the same type of stock i got the first time. calling them again i said i,m done and sent the second stock back and as of 5-17-22 i,m waiting on the charge back to my card.

Exactly my experience with Optics Planet! I ordered 100 bullets that showed in stock. That was a month ago. Never again.

I started having issues with Optics Planet a couple of years ago. I believe it was scope parts, but they delayed, backordered and bullshitted me for a couple of months before I canceled and got my money back. I tried again about a year later and it was more of the same. I haven't ordered with them since then and I don't plan on it.

@CoElkHunter - What they are doing is called a "bait-and-switch". Legal or not...I'm not sure, but it's certainly not ethical.

I placed the order on April 15 and the bullets showed in stock. I received an email the same day saying delivery would be in 4 to 6 weeks. I checked it just now and the estimated delivery is OCTOBER 13!!!

I've made several orders with them over the years with never any issues, and often some good deals. Kinda surprised to see your results, but would have the same reaction to cancel an order when they try to jack the price up like that after the fact.

There seems to be a pattern here ! Is there an ammunition shortage?
Depends in which Galaxy you live? Here, on Earth in the Milky Way Galaxy, you have less of a chance finding a box of .338 Winchester Magnum ammo for under $100 than Townsend @Bob Nelson 35Whelen ever owning a two forty three rifle? Just the way it is! LOL

I purchased a scope from them years ago. All went well but it seems like they're in over their heads these days. Many products out of stock and they try to carry everything.

I have ordered several items in the past. On the optics, they priced the Zeiss optic and cover separately. Not sure what they would have done, if I hold them I did not want the cover. Reminded me of what the camera dealers in NYC used to do, in order to be the cheapest to get the sale, and then you to buy the accessories. On non-optic purchases the items arrived within week of ordering.

Yup. But…..to advertise something as in stock..then promise deli in 6 weeks…..then 6 MONTHS is just bad business. Never had such a problem with Midway.

I have had mixed results…

They sent me obviously opened boxes of 416 Rem one time. Another was fine.

Scope was OK.

They are definitely not to be trusted with high demand items.
