Any fun advice for a visit to Austria?

Spur of the moment, but the wife and I will be a week each in Radstadt and Bad Gastein May 23-June 6th. Any of our members have recommendations for the area at that time? Radstadt resort description listed "hunting within 50 kilometers."

Vienna is worth spending a day or two in (and I generally really dislike big city tourism)..

Schonbrunn Palace is very nice, and there is some really cool history surrounding its design, the gold eagles at the gates, etc..

St Stephens Cathedral is really neat to check out as well.. there is still a turkish cannon ball embedded in one of the walls from the Ottoman seige of Vienna in the 1600's.. theres a place (I cant remember the name) on a hill a few miles from the Cathedral that overlooks the city that Napoleon sat on to finalize his plan for seizing and occupying the city that provides a beautiful view..

Catch some of the classical music historical venues.. Im not much for classical.. but Schubert, Strauss, and others were born there. Mozart lived there the latter part of his life.. Beethoven lived there for a long time.. etc.. theres some very cool stuff surrounding music in Vienna..

There are quaint coffee houses and restaurants everywhere in the old city..

Austria is on the short list of places I want to take my wife.. Ive been there a number of times.. and lived there for about a month years ago while doing some training with Austrian CT units), but shes never been... My plan is to take her to Vienna for a couple of days, Innsbruk for a couple of days, and Hallstatt for a couple of days (cool little lakeside village thats absolutely beautiful and has awesome historical aspects, etc).. and then maybe do a 2-3 day traditional Austrian hunt for mouflon or red stag..


If you dont have time to get to Vienna, both of the locations you are planning to be in are reasonably close to Salsburg.. I only visited Salsburg once, and only for a single day.. but its a beautiful city, and I would imagine there is a ton to do there as well..

I can't give you hunting advise there but I do know Salzburg quite well.

If you like fine dining I would recommend the restaurant at Hotel Sacher, M32 and Goldener Hirsh for amazing Austrian cuisine. The local delicacy is a dessert called Salzburgernocherl and is a must try. There is also St. Peter Stiftskulinarium which has been operating as a restaurant for more than 1200 years.

If you are looking for clothing there is a traditional Austrian clothing shop called Trachten Stassny which is great, and if you like belts there is a custom belt maker who does amazing work while you wait at very reasonable prices at Gurtelmacher Schliesselberger a small family run shop who are a delight to deal with. If you are after traditional Austrian hunting wear I would suggest https://www.jagd-dschulnigg.at/. I have several pieces from them and they have served me very well.

If you are going to make your way to Vienna I am happy to give you more ideas or if you want to be more specific about what you enjoy I can give you some more ideas for Salzburg.

If you go to Sacher restaurant, you must try Sacher cake. Thats a must!

Try to visit Ferlach, fine rifle workshops. There is 11 of them. Research.

Salzburg is one of the special places in Europe. As suggested above, the Goldener Hirsh is one of the world's great places to stay and dine. Should you spend the night, get tickets for the dinner and Mozart chamber orchestra concert where you will dine in the fortress overlooking the city.

During our stay in Salzburg, the wife and I had a perfect 'His and Hers' day.

She did a 'Sound of Music' tour, and I hopped on a local (international ) bus to Berchtesgaden to visit Königssee and the military history sights at Obersalzberg.

a rental car is recommended for daytrips to Salzburg and the villages: Zell am See, Kitzbühel, Gosau + the lake there +Hallstadt (= must see when weather is fine), Bad Aussee + Schladming, Bad Ischel (museum "Kaiservilla" = a lot of hunting trophies to see) - all in 2 hours reachable ...
drive the "Großglockner Hochalpenstraße" = a mountain road trough Austrias bigest Nationalpark = you will see Chamois, Marmot and if lucky Alpine Ibex from the car - at the highest point - close to "Kaiser Franz Josefs Höhe" is a Observation Center sponsored by Swarovski ...

Ferlach (see post of mark-hunter) is reachable in 21/2 hour

at this time of the year - for hunting in Austria there is only roe buck and cullinghunts for young roe and red deer

the rest of the time relax and enjoy the wellness and spa offers in and arround Bad Gastein
