I just picked up my latest shotgun acquisition from my FFL. A 1908 Westley Richards boxlock 20 gauge.
It’s a petite little thing. But man does it mount nice. I’m thinking it may be good medicine for this fall’s Grouse and Woodcock.

Thanks to @rookhawk or curses to Rookhawk. Depending on how you look at it. I’m diving more and more into this British SxS thing.

Rookhawk suggested “Churchills Shotgun Book” Robert Churchill. So I’m practicing my stance, grip and mount.

So back to the 20 gauge. Following Churchills mount instruction. This gun is a piece of art in how it mounts.

Beautiful!

British smoothbores are a deep pool to dive in. Enjoy the ride. I’ve won and lost a lot trading them over the years.

Your library will need to include The Gun and its Development by WW Greener and Gough Thomas’s Gun Book.

Awesome purchase! And I just bought a copy of Churchill's Shotgun Book on this suggestion. In the same vein, what would you guys, and the esteemed Mr. @rookhawk, suggest as the "bible" of Double Rifles? Is it the The Double Rifle Primer by Cal Pappas?

I don’t think there really is a bible for DRs the way there are for shotguns. Many good books on DRs, but it takes a library to get the big picture.

@Altitude sickness blowing that case out with air will clean it a bit, clear packing tape will pull the stuck hairs off the baize returning it to very clean condition. Looks like a dandy of a scatter gun! Congrats.

Wesley Richards produced exceptional SxSs. Before you shoot it, I recommend you find out if the barrels were sleeved, or if it has Damascus barrels. Is it chambered for 2-1/2" or 2-3/4" shells? The reasons are that shotgun barrels up to the turn of the 20th century were made with Damascus steel, before modern steel barrel making came about. There were exceptions to this; some early birds began using steel other than Damascus at the closing years of the 19th century. The reason was due to the introduction of smokeless powder, consequently making black powder cartridges obsolete. Why does this matter? Black powder has a lower combustion/pressure upon ignition, whereas the new nitro powders were combusting at a higher level. This higher pressure would split the Damascus steel. Look at the proof marks on your barrel breech. If you see the stamps "NP" the shotgun has been proofed to shoot modern ammo. If not, you are relegated to low pressure ammo. So far this kind of ammo can be purchased by a couple manufacturers, but they will cost more. The SxS bug bit me long ago.

I have Churchill's "Game Shooting". Think the two book cover much the same methods?

Congratulations! That is indeed a petite little gun, much like the AYA 20 gauge I recently bought. It will be interesting to see how it shoots.

She’s a beaut! Congrats! Love the petite doubles & being a WR nice collector

Congratulations on a real beauty!

Recently bought myself a miroku 500 and tried trap shooting with it. My scores were not good. The ones I hit i pulverized the ones I missed laughed at me. First time I ever shot trap with a SxS but not the last.

Sir, I will gladly take that 16 gauge off your hands. I was waiting for your Winchesters but I'm a sucker for a 16 ga.

I bought a great deal of the brass he had for sale, plus I already had many hundred rounds.

How much brass are you looking for?

Hi Green Chile, I just recently bought a 470 NE barrel for my Thompson Center TCR 83-87 single shot. Im just looking for some 470 NE to shoot at the range just to try it out. I dont need anything special but I just wanted to see what you have left. I dont necessarily even need a full box.
Thanks
Bill
