Animal you wouldn't hunt

Wild dog.

Cheetah
Rhino.... dart only.. am planning this currently to complete my BIG 5.
Giraffe... not adverse to hunting one, but really love my wife of 28 yrs and she is ANTI HUNTING, but accepts our lifestyle etc... the day I sign a hunt contract for a Giraffe, I could just as well sign the papers at the lawyers office !!! She overcame the elephant hunting, but would NEVER accept one of HER giraffes being taken down by a member of her family.
Hunting in Tanzania we came across a recently dead giraffe ( natural causes ).. we actually saw it wobbling along in the early am on the way to the buff areas... anyway, on our return, we found it dead a few yards of the track. I set up my then 14 yr old son behind his "trophy" and took fotos. Duly sent them off to mom back in RSA saying that the lad had shot an impala but the bullet went clean through and took out the giraffe by mistake... she does not understand height differences/ ballistics/ rigor mortis etc, but anyway, we really felt bad as the joke really backfired and she was miserable for days. She also knew that giraffe are Tanazania's National animal and VERY illegal to hunt, hence the issue with the "mistake" impala shot.
Gorillas...... NO WAY JOSE!!!

I think we all agree we wouldn't hunt any animal which was illegal to hunt . . . and wild dog is, as far as I know, protected everywhere it is found, as are gorillas. Hunting these would make you a poacher, and we know what happens - or should happen - to poachers . . .

Well done Hank !!!
Agree on all the above .
Who the hell would want to hunt something endangered ?

Well . . . I might want to hunt something endangered but I'd have to have the permits. For example, in 2014 I hunted scimitar horned oryx, which is "extinct in the wild" (per IUCN). But there are ranchers in South Africa who are raising the animals, and if hunters won't take the surplus, the costs of keeping them around might not be justified. And that could lead to extinction everywhere. As long as we can keep the animals breeding, and reasonable genetic diversity, then hunting such animals is a way of preserving them.

Besides, it was fun.

Seriously? It's not hunting if there's a fence? Do we really have to do this every time? How many square miles will it take before the fence becomes irrelevant?

Agreed Hank....all game farms are "fenced"... even the deer and moose ranches in the USA.
So Dory limits his hunting to the Selous, Zambian GMA's, Zimbabwe CAMPFIRE and hunting concessions.. Mozambique hunting concessions/ Reserves? Expensive way to hunt?

Lots of countries are fenced too. And some are small. So I guess you can't hunt there either.

Sorry guys !
Its a kiwi thing nothing smart intended .
All our hunting here is done on govt land national parks and low fenced stock farms .
After 40 yrs of hunting like this it really takes a complete turn around in principles to hunt behind a fence .
I am not saying it is wrong , it just dosnt seem right for me .

Even worse, we can not even legally carry a hunting firearm in a Helicopter.
