Hey guys, after getting to South Africa and overnighting then heading to Zimbabwe next afternoon i understand you can’t pack the ammo in your luggage like you did going there it has to be in a separate case,
What case are you guys using (for sure I won’t be using TSA looks) and wat experience bad or good did you have,
Thanks
Mike

Google the lightest hard plastic ammo carrier with just one lock hole. Sorry I don’t have the brand. I see so many heavy ones that are a waste. You only get 11.5 pounds and many airlines screw up not knowing you take ammo out to weigh then put back in case. I just got tired of the hassle of explaining their own rules to them my light hard plastic case solves everything

the weight is not the part I’m worried about, it’s getting to zim.
Do they just use a baggage tag for the ammo case and call it good or do you attach it some how to the outside of your bag?
I can’t imagine loosing it on the way, that would not be good.

Flying writhing South Africa (to the Eastern Cape) your ammo has to be checked by itself. I’ve used a plastic case with a lock and my own personal tag. When I get home, I’ll take a picture of what I’ve used.

I was in Harbor Freight yesterday and they had what looked to be good quality hard plastic boxes that will work well for ammo. They ranged from $30-40, also available in several colors. They have an extremely bright orange box that I’m going to get before I head back to Africa, it’s so bright I don’t think it can be overlooked by the baggage handlers.
It’s always made me nervous when checking such a small box unless they put all of the ammo boxes in the same place.
These had 2 locations for locks and good thick foam.

They just tag it like your check in bag and it flies outside your checked bag

I'll tell you to use the TSA locks for the case. That is unless you want to risk being paged and having to leave the gate area to go and unlock the ammo box so that TSA can inspect it somewhere in the airport.

There are dozen of threads on the forum here on cases and locks. Locks keep honest people out of the container and if someone sees the locks and figures that they want what is inside of it they will get inside of the box..

I have a MTM box that my ammo has flown in. I use a couple of pieces of foam rubber to hold the ammo boxes from bouncing around. And yes, I use TSA locks on my ammo box with zero problems.

Will definitely have a look
Thanks so much

Pelican 1200 is what I've used and they work great. Can find them on eBay used for less than $50 USD.

My plan is to get Harbor Freight ammo cans for holding large amounts of ammo. I'll also get some more MTM boxes. I figure I can move ammo to the grid boxes when I shoot, and that way it will be easier to keep count.

Need to have a lockable case that can withstand baggage handlers for traveling to places in Africa when changing flights in RSA.

So if your final destination is Zimbabwe but you are flying into OR Tambo, RSA. They will require you to remove your ammo from your luggage and check it separately before leaving for Zim.

Not sure what MTM case you plan on using, but I’d make it a substantial one.

I have been using a Nanuk 904 in bright orange. Two lock holes, secure latches, heavily constructed and held enough ammor for my 470NE and 375 H&H. 30 470 and 40 375. About $45 on Amazon.

For me size is an issue, as it goes in my checked bag for the international flights and smaller leaves me more space to overpack lother gear as I always seem to do.

I have those and like them.

You do need to worry about the weight. International rules are max 5 kg = 11 lbs of ammo. If case plus ammo is greater than that you will have a problem. Technically it’s ammo only, but you can’t always expect to find someone that will treat is as that. Buy a small Pelican or SKB crush proof case. You’ll have it forever. You can fly to Africa with ammo in your bag, but nearly all internal flights you will be made to check ammo separately. They will just put a bag tag on like any other piece of luggage. Make sure anything you buy will hold up to baggage handlers.

It’s 5 kg which is exactly 11 lbs not 11.5 lbs.

Jake, Sorry to bug you again. I was wondering if you could share a. couple actual pics of this crossbow with me?

Xpedition Archery USED Scrapeline390X Sniper Gray Crossbow XACW1001 - Light Wear - Needs Bolt/Arrow Guide Spring UA5689

If it is in a decent shape, would you be willing to sell it for $100 shipped? IS it missing the retention spring that goes over the bolt?
Thank you Ferenc
