Affordable Hippo Hunt in South Africa?

Hello to everyone on this forum! If it is my goal to hunt a hippo (on land) somewhere in South Africa, would anyone have any suggested outfitters for me to reach out to?

I hunted with Bayly-Sippel and they are a great company. I know that they have done land-based hippo hunts in the recent past. It's a good place to start.

BTW - other than being a happy client, I have no affiliation with or financial interest in Bayly-Sippel.

Almost all of the Hippo hunts in South Africa wil be for tame animals who are fed and kept in the ponds on the farm.
They'll arrange it so you can shoot one on land but it won't be a truly wild hippo.

Contact Conrad Fick at Mpeti Safari's in KZN. Just did a buff and plains game hunt with them and had a great time. We saw lots of hippos in Lake Jozini and several places on land where they were living while hunting bushbuck in the thick stuff. We actually left one area when it got a little hippo hot for us.
They also have sugar cane fields near the lake they hunt and told several stories about hunting them there and in the orange groves.

Ordinarily we would send a direct message to you, but sending this message in response to your message openly as it seems to be others on this feed that are also interested in a hippo hunt (perhaps for next year).

I know you said South Africa, but I thought I would send you an incredible opportunity to something you may not have considered yet. Our quota for hippo in an open area is unfortunately sold out in RSA for this year BUT we have one more Hippo on quota for this year in Mozambique.

The 80000 acre concession area is just over the Komatiepoort boarder crossing.
The area is wild and open with the Kruger National Park on the Moz size.
Clients generally fly into OR Tambo take a connection flight to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (in Nelspruit). From there we collect the hunting party and drive (2 hours to border) and then to the concession area. From the boarder it is only a 1-hour drive to the camp. It really is a easy and quick trip from RSA, but with the incredible privilege of hunting a free roaming hippo on open wild land.

We have Hippo in RSA on quota should you need be interested in 2026.

By far the best place to hunt hippo on land is with @DALTON & YORK SAFARIS in the Omay in Zimbabwe. You will have opportunities daily and will see hundreds of hippo.

Gentlemen, this is an interesting thread but there are some misconceptions about a genuine Dry Land Hippo hunt. There are places where one can shoot a hippo out of the water, but he will likely be close to the water and maybe you catch him out of the water, maybe not. There are also places, yes in South Africa, where you may run into a situation where a hippo is either in an enclosed environment or recently released.

The truth is, it’s not that easy to find a true Dry Land hippo hunt, because there aren’t all that many areas where hippos live in the forest far from water. Tanzania has such places, specifically in the Selous Game Reserve. I believe but am not positive that the Niassa Game Reserve also has some dry land hippo hunting. There may be some in the Luangwa Valley but I’m fairly sure they’re all pretty closely associated with the Luangwa River. Other than the Selous, I don’t think there are many places where you can hunt a true Dry Land hippo.

Perhaps I’m splitting hairs but I don’t think all Dry Land hippo hunts are created equal. It’s more expensive to hunt them in the Selous but it’s a genuine hunt and, I believe, worth it.
