98 extractor claws

A buddy of mine brought this to me his dad and grandfather were always working on Mausers it’s a mostly complete set of 3 extractors. I always wondered how they made them this really shows how it was done in the days before CNC machines. Seeing it tells me exactly how they did it but my modern thought process did not grasp it until I saw it. Now it makes sense.

thanks for posting the pictures, I have ofter wondered how it was done and thought is was something like that. I just put the right extractor(shell,s feed out of the magazine and follower that has the bolt stop when empty in my custom big game rifle in 35 whelen.

yes, but ruger was very late to the game, the mauser boys were at it in the 1890,s.

I’m a machinist by trade and that is probably the last way I would have thought of making claws but once I saw it and thought how it was done 80-120 years ago it’s genius.

I always wondered why Mauser used metric for cartridges but threads per inch in their manufacturing turns out that for some reason they could not get German machines so imported them from the US. Any one else have any history on this.

Every article I've read on Mauser production indicated that at the time, the British produced the best machine tools and that is what Mauser used. The British machines used Imperial calibrations and imperial leadscrews. This was also the period when the best specification for threads was the Whitworth system hence why original Mauser threads are 55 degree included angle.

I’m going to have to do some digging the article I was reading said that Peter Paul Mauser was not in political favor. I don’t doubt the information you have given. There may have multiple reasons.

Not out of commission completely but out of energy at the end of the day I’m having trouble breathing and no energy I work 10 hour shifts with hour drive on each end. Weekend is time to cut firewood and recover. So I didn’t get much done fast shot it a couple times before and found a serious flaw in my sights. When I got the globe front sight I messed with it until I got a comfortable sight picture but my rear sight was made before I settled on front then turned out to be to short. Hopefully I will get to shoot it this weekend with rear sight 2.0 a complete redesign and made of steel. The good news is my breathing trouble which in neither heart or lung connected may be caused by medicine I was taking. I’m off it now and was to that it may not take 2-4 weeks to get out of my system. When my buddy gets another gun to blue he is going to blue it for me he doesn’t fire up the tanks until he has 2-3 to do at once.
