9.3x62 load

They cut throats long on CIP specs. I don't remember what the chamber length actually was on the 2 CZ's I had but mag box was long also so I just seated them out, or "sear" (ed) them out as they say Down Under.:LOL:;):ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::rolleyes::D

Well maybe if you soakeminsider for a while they might soften up some.. :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::confused::D:confused::confused:;):ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::D

I have hunted the 4 corners of the earth with the 9.3x62, mostly used it in Africa and shot both PG and DG with it..I settled long ago on a simple system of 60 grs. of RL-17 in these bullets 320 Woodleighs at 2408 FPS, 286 Nosler partitions at 2550 FPS. and the 250 Barnes TSX with 62 grs. of RL-15, loads can vary a bit depending on which rifle I use but they are proven loads, used by most who know the 93x62...Like the 7x57 the 9.3 is underloaded in the US due to the number of junk old guns in those calibers, Its closer to the 375 H&H than any wildcat or factory round based on the 06..The use of 30-06 brass to form 9.3x62 creates a bulge in the base of the 06 case, and the reloading process overworks the brass and can create a dangerous practice, plus short brass life, so if you must use 06 brass, then fireform it and neck size only, but 9.3x62 brass from Midway or Grafs is about the same price as 30-06. I use PPU brass..

@shootist~ The two best powder I have found for the 9.3 are 1. RL17 2. Ramshot Big game and IMR 4320 a distant 3rd.

I would start with 60 gr of Rl-17 and work you way up to what is safe in your rifle. Looks like you have already determined the throat and magazine length so if you are seating the bullet longer to take advantage of this start with 63gr.

Im getting proper velocity for the bullets in question, I have worked up hotter loads as you suggest, but considering African heat, and bullet construction I prefer to stay just a tad South of max in big bores. If I feel the need for more velocity then I would use the 93x64 or 375 H&H or Ruger. The 63 gr. load in my 9.3x62 was a sticky bolt and a extractor mark,

My selected loads for my particular guns consist of the 320 gr. Woodleigh, the 286 Nosler, and the 250 barnes TSX, with 60 grs. of RL-17 for 2400 fps, 2550 fps and 250 gr BArnes TSX is the exception with 62 grs. of RL-15 for 2577 fps..Ive found that RL-15 is a excellent powder in the 9.3x62 as well, I get about 75 FPS more with RL-17, hardly worth the trouble, so I would let accuracy make my decision..In my case RL-17 won by a hair..

@Bob Nelson 35Whelen ,
I have plenty of room to the lands and also mag length, but the neck of the 9.3 case is pretty short. I'm already stretched a bit.

@Newboomer ,
Thanks. I'll keep for reference when I source some 250 TSX (FB) bullets.
Is your 4064 the "IMR" variety? And do you happen to know the decapped weight of your Hornady brass? The Lapua brass weighs around 95 grains, so possibly less internal volume.

FWIW, the Nosler Max load with IMR4064 is 56.0 grains with 250s. Same for the Swift manual. Both are probably on the safe side to allow for older rifles.

My 4064 is IMR and I don't have an empty case to weigh right now.

Excellent info in this thread and a great round for a reloader to spend some time with! (y)

Welcome Ray!

I still find Winchester StaBALL 6.5 intriguing. I recently corresponded with an individual using that powder to load 375 H&H cartridges. I'd love to have some custom loads in 7mm-08 and 7X64mm to start with for exploring its potential. Sunny South Texas hits some daily high temperatures to rival African heat, some years more so than others.

After all these years, I ran across a used 375 Ruger Hawkeye and Ive been playing with it, its the early light weight at 7.5 lbs naked, and 8.5 with a 3X Leupold...Extremely accurate rifle with every load Ive tried and all loads to the same POI, that's the kind of gun I like and usually keep...Im really impressed with the caliber, and it beats my Holland by 100 plus fps with all bullet weights, recoil is there for sure due to the weight...Hard to compare it to my 9.3x62 but other than recoil, it surpases the 9.3x62..but "other than recoil" is a big plus for the 9.3x62..then again I have lost of room to cut back to the accepted 300 gr. at 2500 FPS, a load that has proven buffalo worthy for me over the last 40 or so years. I like this Ruger.

I have a Husqvarna 1640 in 9.3x62.
These are two of my pet loads.
286 grain Hornady Interlocks
58 grains of R-15
53.5 grains of Varget (very accurate)

Does anyone know if Ray is still around? Haven't seen anything from him in awhile.

Hi Karakolev,

I do not load for the 9,3x62 with 258 gr RWS Speed Tip pro. But I do for the H-Mantel 258 gr in my 9,3x62. And many 250 gr cup and core and mono metallic bullets as well.
I don´t know your rifle barrel length but if yours have 22" to 24" and if you want to know the potencial max SAFE velocity, I would start with 60 gr of R15, adding grain by grain, stopping when reach 2600 f/s, Aprox. 790 m/s.
If your rifle has very short barrel length, stop when reach 2500/2550 f/s.
I use this load with all 250/258 gr bullets in my BRNO ZKK 600 9,3x62 without ANY problem and with excelent accuracy.
Good luck!

CF

I like 250 Accubonds with 62.5 gn of N140 or Varget
286 Hornadys with 56.5 gn N140 or 58.5 gn N540
286 Noslers with 66 gn Big Game

Hi wswolf,

Your loads almost matches mines!
With all 250/258 gr bullets I use 63/64 gr R15 for 2650 f/s.
With 286 gr bullets I use 66/67 gr W760 for 2450/2500 f/s.
All using NORMA cases.
Of course, this loads MUST BE APROACHED FROM 2 or 3 gr BELOW!!!!!

Best

CF

I have been using Geco cases and Federal 210 primers.
Velocity from my 22" barrel Ruger #1:
250 NAB 62.5 gn N140 or Varget - 2640 fps
286 Hornady 56.5 gn N140 - 2313 fps
286 Hornady 58.5 gn N540 - 2400 fps
286 Nosler 66 gn Big Game - 2480 fps

The 286 Hornady loads were chosen for accuracy. I had not considered using 760 because I found it to be very temperature sensitive in other cartridges and Montana is notable for wide temperature variation. The density and burning rate of 760 seem well suited to the 9.3x62.

Cheers,
Walt
