9.3 X62 brass and bullet powder recommendation

I have 2 firings on my hornady brass, and 2 on a few lapua that I took to Africa last year. I shot them all once with a lighter load, then FL sizes them before loading for Africa. I have at least 3 on som wood my Norma brass. I don’t bother with 30-06, what’s the point with all the 9.3 brass

I say Hornady since I guess Hornady uses 06 sized cases there a bit skinny compared to 9.3x62

I've done a lot with the 9.3x74R which is similar.

I agree with a lot of the suggestions here. If longer shots are possible, the most capable and versatile bullet is the 250 Nosler Accubond because of it's high BC. For powder, Alliant RL-17 can give great velocity. You should be able to get between 2600-2700 fps depending on barrel length and messing around in quickload, putting you in the 3800-4000 ft/lb ME range. This seems right since I get 2600 in the x74R with a 22" barrel using RL-17. The Accubond really lives up to its name as I was hitting my 12" steel plate at 600 yards every time with the 9.3x74R. I hope it is obvious that I would not attempt a shot at an animal that far, but the practice gave me a lot of confidence in my drop and wind calculations (light wind day). A 300 yard shot on an animal would be that much easier though.

Blaser R8
Lapua brass
250gr TTSX - 62.2gr CFE 223
250gr Lapua Naturalis - 62.0gr CFE 223
F210
3.291”coal
Both loadings mid 2500fps

The TTSX has taken Plains Game from Spring-bok to Zebra and Kudu, Moose and Black Bear. The Lapua has only punched holes in paper so far.

I'm planing on getting the noe mold and running them 2000-2300 if possible so don't need the fastest powder out there, only will be shooting deer or bear if I'm lucky. Like to try some popcorn loads, have to look up I've got 2400 and unique.

I had some issues with PPU brass. About half of each bag wouldn’t fit, we’re tight or would only go into the shell holder at a certain angle. No problem with Lapua brass.
I ran a penetration test with 250gr Barnes TTSX, 286gr Swift and 270gr Speer. The Barnes penetrated the best.

The 9.3x62 is not fussy. It will accurately shoot most everything you load in it. It will put a large hole through anything you shoot with it. The blood trails will be short and copious. What’s not to love.

Recoil gets your attention with the little Sako 85 Carbine, so my plinking load is a Lapua 185gr bullet over 20 grains of IMR 4759 in Norma brass. Great for offhand practice on steel, with irons or scope.

Nice looking rifle! How is the accuracy with those 185 grain bullets?
Haven't really tested them for accuracy.

20 grains of 4759 is a reduced load. I'm hitting a 12" steel plate at 100 yards, offhand from a 20" barrel. Not the best test protocol for bullet accuracy, but it's inexpensive and easy on the shoulder.

I used RWS and Lapua for years, but the last few years due to availability Ive been using PPU and no complaint. I like Woodleigh bullets bug again available raised its ugly head so I use Nosler 286 gr partitions and Accubonds , swift 300s but keep in mind that the 9,3x62 will work with about any bullet that shows a lot of lead exposed, the caliber is kind to bullets, a forgotten rule these days it seems. I use RL-17

Mine puts every bullet I've tried with it so far into very close to the same place. So far have tried 232 Norma Oryx; 250 Barnes TSX and Nosler AccuBond; 270 Speer Hot-Cor; 286 Barnes TSX, Hornady Interlock, Norma Oryx, Nosler Partition and Solid; the 320 Woodleigh--and maybe some I've forgotten. So far they've all landed within 2" of each other at 100 yards.

I have yet to take an animal with my 9.3's, but here are some loads that shot well.
Rifles used ZG47, ZKK 600, CZ550 (I have the complete set of BRNO rifles that were produced in this calibre to my knowledge). No matter which 9.3 I shoot the reloads all shoot with the exact same point of impact & group size at 100yds. Pretty amazing

Some loads that work well in my rifles:

Bullet: Lapua 285gr MEGA
Powder: H414 (can be affected by hot temps I'm told)
Charge: 63.0gr (max load)
Primer CCI 200
Case: Lapua
COL 3.236"
Avg 5 shot vel 2275fps

5 shot 100yd group 0.64"
5 shot 200yd group 1.44" (3" low with dead centre aiming point)
5 shot 300yd group 5.81" (22.5" drop with dead centre aiming point)

Tried same loads with PRVI 285gr, Win 748, & Varget. Accuracy wasn't overly impressive in my rifles.

Bullet: Speer 270gr Spitzer
Powder: IMR 4350
Charge: 64.0gr (max load)
Primer: CCI 200
Case: Lapua
Chronograph was being temperamental, so I don't have any reliable readings but I'm guessing they would be traveling around 2300fps.
5 shot 100yd group 0.70"

Bullet Speer 270gr Spitzer
Powder: IMR 4895
Charge: 56gr (max load)
Primer: CCI 200
Case: Lapua
5 shot avg vel 2325fps
5 shot 100yd group 0.89"

Bullet: Speer 270gr Spitzer
Powder: IMR 4064
Charge: 58gr (max load)
Primer: CCI 200
Case: Lapua
5 shot avg vel 2439fps
5 shot 100yd group 0.50"

Chronograph was 6ft from muzzle
Loads are for FYI purposes. Always work up from minimum's.

I use the 286 Partition with H4350 in my 9.3X62... I wongive the load, cuz the lawyers will go mental...lol.
It does a great job on our big bears and moose. I stick with the one load and know it intimately. My rifle is a Ruger African with a Leupold VX-R 2-7X33 mounted, although I have had a dozen or so 9.3's over the decades. I also have a nice Ruger No.1-S 9.3X74R that I load with the SP-RP and use for deer and bears.

Whats not to share? H4350 load is available from Hodgdon.

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.

Nice one there. I guided for mulies and elk for about 10 or so years in northern New Mexico.
