6.5 PRC for plains game?

Hi there brain trust. Just seeing if anyone has run the 6.5PRC for plains game in Africa at all?


I have a custom built gun and shoots single ragged holes and I am considering taking it on my next trip over to Namibia.

Generaly 7mm is regarded as the minimum.
Hope you are not using the 147 ELD bullets.

Well, some would use a Creedmoor and if that’s allegedly good then the PRC. Is better.

I expect it would be fine with a suitable projectile. You know it and you know it to be accurate.

It might have limitations on the bigger plains game.

Ask your PH, if all goes well and you delivering results he might have confidence in the same on the bigger plains game.

Depends on the game you are using it on. Which species do you plan to hunt and what bullet are you using?

I feel like plans game is such a broad category. Likely fine for an impala not so much for an eland or giraffe. What species are you targeting.

As others have said the right bullet will he important especially as many shots will likely be on the closer side and velocity will still be relatively high.

Choose a good quality bullet, like Barnes TTSX 120 gr, Swift Scirocco 130 gr or any other premium bonded bullets, and it will do the job !

As I already mentioned, I have used the 6.5 Creedmoor quite a bit on plains game ! I shot many waterbucks, wildebeests and kudus with it as well as smaller games like impalas, warthogs and springboks, and even a spotted hyena. I have never felt undergunned with this caliber on such games.

However, it won't be my first choice on elands, or if I have to hunt in the north-east where the bush is very thick because for such place, I prefer bigger calibers with heavier bullets.

I met a group of American hunters several years ago and one of their rifles was in 6.5 PRC. They used the ELD-X 143 gr and they killed several plains game with it and no problem.

Kevin375 is on it. 6.5 PRC is fine as stated and as we have said many times shot placement is more important than caliber.

We just returned from the cape and the wife used her 6.5 creedmoore and shot gemsbok and eland both with 1 shot kills. She used 143 grain nosler accu bond long range bullets. It worked flawlessly and you will have no problem. Enjoy your hunt.

Perfect for anything up to blesbok. I personally wouldn’t use it on gemsbok, zebra, eland, or kudu. It can work, but there are better choices.

Yes. We took my wife's rifle on one safari and both used it. I would say it was a disappointment. Maybe it's the sorry Hornady bullets but that caliber is not well suited for Africa. From Gemsbuck running off quite a bit before expiring (versus 7mm Mag or .300Win putting them down) to Springbuck getting blown to pieces it just does not fit any use. I was hunting the Springbuck slam and was having to try to shoot for the last rib, almost guts, to limit the damage. Maybe if there was a TTSX for this caliber it would be better?
.300 Win with 180g TSX for me please.

As it stands I'm keen on Kudu and Sable and any of the Tiny Ten. Even though the Hornady ELDX in the Precision Hunter line shoot single hole groups in this rifle, I've always been a fan and believer of the Barnes TTSX and have shot many deer (Red deer stags and Rusa stags, both heavy boned and tough) here in Australia with those bullets and as someone stated above, shot placement is key and this will be my 4th trip back to Namibia.

I just landed at O R Tambo with my 6.5PRC a few hours ago. I will be running 142 ABLR at moderate speeds on a variety of Eastern Cape species. I will be sure and post the results.
