Just saw where a guy in the UK is building a 500 Jeffery on a Mauser action. Is the 500 Jeff just a necked up 404? And how does it compare to the say, 500 NE? I told him I wanted one. Haha. Left handed! I’m think Zastava action. What say y’all?

I don't believe it's just a 404 necked up. It's capacity is 158g. It can be built on a standard 98 Mauser action but it take a real artist of a gunsmith to make that happen.

I don't believe the 500 Jeffery has a parent cartridge, but I could be wrong.

It will be more powerful than the 500 NE, it's more comparable to the 505 Gibbs.

No it is not a necked ip 404 Jeff.
It is a lot more powerful than a 500 NE with the ability to use 600gr bullets.
I would not build one on a Zastava action.

Are you perhaps referring to the clips posted by Ian Sweetman of the feeding on his 500J build? Ian is an absolutely top notch UK independent gunsmith and has an association with the likes of Westley Richards and Purdey.

Cartridges like the 11,2x72 or the 12,7x70 from Schüler ( 500 Jeffery ) and also the cartridge 10,75x68 from Mauser, were designed to fit into a normal Mauser 98 system. There are compromises in terms of the length of the case, the deep seat of the bullets and also the rebated rim, anything that can cause problems. The cartridges 11,2x72 and 12,7x70 from Schüler, the latter in particular, are certainly better off in an Mauser Magnum System. I speak from experience because I have shot DG with all three cartridges.

Custom rifle caliber 12,7x70 Schüler built with a Mauser Magnum Action.

Yep I emailed him. He was really nice. Referred me to a guy in the states.

Are you sure it's a 500 jeffery, wondering how that could be possible
He said it was. Lots of machine work to make the rebated rim feed. It was Ian Sweetman.

My first choice would be a Granite Mountain Arms African Magnum Mauser action. Followed by the old Czech BRNO ZKK602 action. Third choice would be a Remington Model 30 Express action.

What about the .577 and .600 Nitro Express ?
I never saw those cartridges in Spain, nor advertisements for rifles that fire those cartridges. I have a 458 Lott and people I have seen who have hunted in Africa have 458 Winchester, 416 Rigby and Remington Magnums and of course 375 H&H Magnums.

Hi Lance, Hope you well. I collect Mauser rifles and they are very much part of my cultural history in Africa. Would you consider selling the rifle now a year on ? I'd like to place it in my collection of Mauser rifles. Many thx

I saw where you hunted elephant with backcountry safaris in Zimbabwe.
Was looking to book an elephant hunt and wanted to know how your hunt went
and if you would recommend them.

Thanks
Mike
hi, do you know about lions hunters, leopard hunters, and crocodiles hunters of years 1930s-1950s
I'm new to Africa Hunting. I would like to purchase a Heym 450-400 double rifle. I'm left-handed but would prefer a non-canted gun. Is anyone in the community considering parting with theirs?
