470-475 Turnbull

Great! We should be able to locate ammo for several rifles of 40 caliber +
If your .405 double was proofed above 48,000 psi, you can try my 400 grain .405 hand loaded DG ammo. If not, you can pop off a 400 grain round or two with my 1895 .405 - standing only.

When the time approaches, I will ask Ricky (from the 45-90 bullet testing team) if we can use the family range at his nearby farm.

For Von S,
IIRC , that long shot was at Adobe Walls on the north side of the Canadian river.
I grew up on the south side of the Canadian not far away.

That's it CRS!

Adobe walls!

I like Texas History. Lots of shooting and putting an azz whoop on thems that deserved it.

Plus throughout the years i almost have perfected my " eeeeeeeehhaaawwww"

Thanks for the schoolin

This .45-90 (.450 NE 2.4) has taken, ele, leopard, 3 buff in RSA, and in Texas, lots of exotics.
The DG load for buff is Alaska Bulletworks heavy jacket 450 grain FMJ at 2150 fps.
Compare that to other .458 buffalo loads and you will see the obvious.
North Fork and Punch solids were used on ele frontal brain shots and they shot through the head and back into the body.

BTW, that is an 1895 .405 leaning on that RSA buff in the picture to the left. 400 grain Woodleigh Weldcore at 2076 fps.

With the right ammo, the .45-70 (.450 NE 2.1) can do the job too.

love your 45-90! who made it? im assuming its modern gun proofed for smokeless powder. I like the idea of the 45-90 over the 475 Turnbull since .458" bullets are more widely available.

the 405 Win with a 400gr bullet at 2000+fps would be a sound dangerous game cartridge. is that speed within standard pressures or are you needing to push it?

I don't agree with the 45-70 being a suitable DG cartridge. I do not believe its able to push a 450gr bullet at 2000fps and still be within correct pressure limits. im not saying its impossible to take DG with it... but its a poor cartridge for the job. my signature is from an old thread discussing using the 45-70 for dangerous game.

@Milehighshooter No is was a 475 Linebaugh from the factory. It will also shoot 480 ruger.Turnbull quoted me a decent price for the work so I need to decide yes or no on the project:A Thumbs Up:
I have a .300 H&H Ruger No.1 with an English walnut stock and color and blue work by Turnbull. The result is beautiful and very English. Sounds like it would be an interesting buffalo rifle.

@Red Leg Sir you nailed the exact look in the 300 I am looking to build.

Red Leg,
Beautiful wood and good photography.

I have used a Ruger #1 on prairie dogs, but I am such a poor shot that I need a repeater for big game. ;)

Matt85,
Miroku made my 1886"one of 501" .45-90. It is a TD with 26 inch octagon barrel and weighs 9.5 pounds empty. Marbles peep tang sight and folding barrel sight( for ele and buff up close)-a good sight combo.
+1 on great variety of effective .458 bullets. Also compare 450 grain ballistics with T475.

Two good 400 grain Woody loads for .405 WCF which has 4 round capacity:
48,000 psi with Ramshot TAC load of 2076 fps. Now worked up N133 load at 2050 fps and 36,000 psi for double rifle. N530specs say it may boost that 150 fps at same pressure. All proven DG material.

To each his own WRT .45-70 on DG. It has been done many times over the years and IMHO, will be done more now with availability of better bullets and powders.
For instance, in our .45-70&90 bullet tests, from 50 yards the 45-70 drove a 430 grain Punch bullet through a 5/8 inch steel plate! Punched a Daylight Hole (terminology for Von S) right through it at less than 1900 FPS. See Grizzly Cartridge website for 45-70 Punch +P loads at 2050 fps. Hand loading not necessary for DG load that will PUNCH through just about any game.

I have some 430 grain .458 Punch bullets left over from the tests, reckon how fast N530 could drive one in my 1886 .45-90? The 1886 has already pushed a 450 grain Kodiak to 2150 fps, so maybe 2200+ for the 400 grain Punch? Who needs more for the big nasty buggers. Probably could line up 3 and shoot through them all. Those DG would then be Dead Game!
Reckon what an 1886 .45-70 like the one in my safe could do with N530 and a 400 grain Punch? Sounds like a fun experiment, eh?

Thank you for your polite comments and questions. Civil discourse can be fun and enlightening.

I am just building the 475Turnbull for fun, hunting will be pigs and maybe bear here in the US. When wandering in the bush for cape buff or bigger I will be carrying my 450/400 or bigger double. Might consider it for cats.. But I firmly believe in a SD of over .300 for thick skinned DG bullets.

Turnbull's is also doing 1886 .50-110 Win conversions with faster twist 1-20' rifling to accommodate heavier bullets. I ordered one and should have it in my safe in the next month or two. I plan to work up 535 grain loads in the 2000+ fps range with it. That should just about qualify as a serious DG combination.

My other DG levergun is an original Win 1895 in .405 WCF. I'm shooting 400 gr Woodleighs through her at a comfortable 1950 fps. She's an old girl, so I want to keep the loads below 45k psi.

I've shot some big bodied Aussie buff with her and was extremely impressed with her performance. Penetration was phenomenal with only one bullet being recovered, and it had travelled full length of the body and was under the skin at the opposite end.

I can't wait to try the big .50-110 out on buffalo, she should hit much harder than the .405 did.
