Hello,
In the back of my father in laws safe I found a mint 460 Weatherby Magnum,
H-Mark V (Japan) (1972-94). My guess is it’s mid to late 80’s… it’s magna ported and wood stock. This thing has about 5 rounds through it.

I’d like to shoot a Cape buffalo with this thing.

Currently it’s got a 40 year old Leuopold 2-7x sitting on it. It looks like the current 1 piece base is not using all 4 holes, only 2 in front and 1 in the back, I think I see an extra free hole in the back (not an expert on direct mounting scopes). I want to replace the base, rings and scope with something modern.

2 questions

1. How would I get started finding the right base and rings? I haven’t had much luck online with info about Talley or similar handling the recoil. I’ve read about putting black gasket compound in the rings. I’ve read about 460 shearing screws. I’ve read about tapping the holes bigger…
Online I’m seeing picture of separate dovetail bases with dovetail rings.
Should I call Talley or another manufacturer. Or do you guys know

2. I was planning on putting the Leupold
VX6-HD 1-6x24 on it, looks popular in the photos… no bad experiences with that scope on here?

Thanks

One thing I’d like to add… I live in a small town and the gunsmith is getting really old, slow, sold his shop and is barely working. Desperately need an experienced smith to move to town.

Good morning - is there any reason the current rings and bases wouldn’t work? If you get a 1” tube scope you should be fine.
I’d suggest an extended eye relief scope.
If you aren’t familiar with this rifle, and specifically the 460wby cartridge I would suggest maybe taking that scope off, then firing a round through it before spending a good chunk of change on a new scope. I only recommend taking that scope off as it doesn’t look to be an extended eye relief scope - might get a little Leupold kiss…..

I guess I just read into the internet a little to deep and was concerned this existing base connection might not be strong enough

I have been using a "Personal Property" rider on my State Farm homeowner's policy to cover guns when I travel with them.
I have several firearms, but only one is worth over $20K (A Heym double rifle).
Very interested.
Would firearms be covered for damage, as well as, complete loss?
I'll can let the State Farm rider cover my watches...
