460 accuracy

You younger guys - "GO FOT IT!!!"

This 60-year old geezer has limited out with a .44 Mag...

As far as handguns are concerned, I'm into .22's and 10mm's
I truly find my .480 Ruger Superblackhawk to be easier shooting than my .44 mag S&W PC Light Hunter. They are both within 2 ounces of each in weight…

Something about the .480 driving lower pressures with a heavy bullet just works so well.

(*double hearing protection is definitely mandatory with either gun)

My .44 Magnum is a S&W 629 with a 8 3/8" barrel, so the recoil is somewhat subdued by the weight of the revolver.

I had a Taurus Ragging Bull in 454. Notice and note the "had". It was fine with 240 and 260 grain bullets but the 300 grain Slugs Of Disaster, loaded below max, were anything but fun. If,,, if someone built a lever gun in 460, 16 inch barrel, I would consider it.

Ok would you mind explaining that one? I have no idea what you mean but I'm not mechanically dysfunctional so if it's beneficial I'll give her a whirl
Sure thing! Use the pin gauges to measure all of the chambers. Best case scenario, they are all a bit undersized. Use the reamer to open each up to the same diameter (bullet diameter or slightly smaller for cast, equal or tiny bit oversized for jacketed). Worst case is they are all oversized and you’re stuck. Reality is somewhere in between and then the idea is to minimize chamber differences. This assumes that the forcing cone/barrel likes the chamber diameter. After all the chambers are the same or close, now experiment with loads.

Yeah, hate to say it - wish it was otherwise, but a magnum handgun is double ears, plugs and muffs, every time.
Or you'll be in physical pain. I fired it ONCE without ear pro with a .454 Casull. I missed and made the appropriate correction, but couldn't untangle the eardrums from the middle of my skull in time to take the shot.
As much as I love magnum handguns, the need for ear protection limits my hunting with them.
I cannot hunt with others around unless they too have ear protection. I have told companions to cover their ears before firing and gotten Yeah...yeah... When the shockwave passed they were crawling out from the brush having dove for cover thinking the gun exploded. One fellow very artfully described the manner in which the leafy branches of the trees shook and moved out of the way. It is not uncommon for close game to be startled to the point of falling down when the gun goes off.

I get about a two to three inch group of five shots at 100 yards rested and scoped. I use the original published load of a 200 grain FTX and charge of 296. Nearly double the powder in a .44 magnum load comparably.

That's crazy I've never heard that about one chamber being better than others but it makes sense. Thanks
Yup it happens. I have a cylinder throat reamer set up to ream the cylinders throats to a uniform size.

Awesome...now I want to do this too. Thanks...I was happy now I'm wondering how to go about this and see if I can't squeeze the groups down.
You need the following.
And

There is / was a company that will also do this for you.

I just bought a 460 sw this year also 8 3/8 inch barrel .My best shooting long range pistol is a dan wesson 357 rem maxium .I can hit gallon jugs all day at 150 yards with open sites .Its crazy accurate with a scope 1.25 inches at 100 yards about 3 inches at 200.I it loves hornady xtp bullets and aa1680 powder .My 454 super redhawk ruger with a scope shoots 3 inches at 100 yards .My 460 is the one without a rail .I bought it mainly as investment .

thanks for your reply bob , is it feasible to build a 444 on a P14/M17 , or is the no4 enfield easier to build? i know where i can buy a lothar walther barrel in 44, 1-38 twist , but i think with a barrel crown of .650" the profile is too light .
