I've been impressed with the performance of all copper projectiles for general hunting. I'm preparing for an upcoming hunt which may involve both plains game and possibly a buff. A local company makes all copper .458 projectiles in both 400g and 450g weight. Both projectiles have an excellant BC (.363 and .368 respectively). The 400g can probably be driven a bit faster than the 450g (loads still to be developed and tested).

My only question is whether a 400g all copper projectile would have enough reliable penetration for buff.

You are not specifiying if these bullet are expanding or solids?

If solids I don't think you need a solid at all most mono expanding bullets expand and penetrate enough that an solid is obsolete.

Then I would rather stick with 450gr to the lighter 400gr as the added weight will help with penetration.

An all copper will have the penetrating potential for Buff. Is it red copper?
I’ve used Peregrine, and Dzombo which are solid copper and the old PMP 286g solids in a .375.
It should have a flat meplat and not a round nose.

450 or even 480 gns if you can get them.

I assume these bullets have been tested on buffalo and big animals in Australia so there is load data and performance bar being set??

Shoot a couple with each then let us know. I doubt there’s much real world difference in terminal performance, assuming identical construction.

Here's a photo of Tony receiving that Shaw & Hunter award at the 1970 annual EAPHA Dinner Dance. Tony Dyer, then EAPHA President and Princess (Sunny) von Auersperg presented it. I also attended the event.
