No duh! Yes, am well aware of that. But in a panic situation with a bear on top of you, think you will have time for single action? No, I don't either.

Right. Guys that do nothing all day but practice and use two hands to rung the gun. With a bear on top you or about to be, I would rather have a Smith in my hands, than a Colt.

After all that's what this discussion was about, bear country back up. Not about bear hunting. In that case I would probably opt first of all for a rifle, but if purposely handgun HUNTING bear, I would use a big single action.

Sure, but again we are talking about putting a handgun in the hands of a novice for bear protection....which bears (pun not intended) little relation to what JM can do.

Thank you for all the input. I chose the pistol that felt best in my hand, had a good trigger and sights that suited me. I have signed up for some training, ordered some ammo. already have a bunch of practice ammo (Win whitebox). Ordered some Underwood 200 grain Xtreme Penetrators and 255 grain BB hard cast.........again, thanks for advice..........all of life is a series of compromises, so there are certainly other choices...but this is now mine.....................FWB

Congrats, think you will like the 1911, I have over a half dozen. .45's and one .38 Super. For sure my fav semi auto pistol.

Now that you have bought the handgun you need to learn how to use it and practice. Remember what you do in practice you will do in real live, you need to eradicate any bad habits and keep practicing your good habits so when the brown stuff hits the fan your training kicks in. If not you’re your worst enemy.

Now you need a holster, or perhaps more than one.
There are zillions of options out there. I think everybody should have a "strong side" belt holster. For range use at least. Leather or kydex might be a matter of taste and environment. A holster should prevent access to the trigger and have adequate retention to secure the pistol in the environment where you want to use it. And it should still be easy to draw the pistol from it.

I have an all stainless steel SIG P220 .45 ACP with adjustable night sights. It fits my hands like a glove and shoots out of the box about as well as a tuned 1911. This is my go to pistol.

If you are going to a shooting range with a holster, you might need a belt holster. Options are overwhelming....

With a belt holster, a very good and RIGID belt is also a must.

I like 1911s a lot and at present have one in .38 Super.
Got lonesome for a .45 and found a Beretta Px4 Storm on sale. It is light in weight and the trigger is remarkable. The double-action pull is light, smooth and even all the way. I shot a few inches low with ball ammo so it got an adjustable sight set from Beretta.
