I am looking at the Swift Break-Away Solid in .375 cal. 300 grain for elephant. Does anyone have any experience with this bullet?

If not what solids do you guys have experience with in .375 cal.? What do you recommend?

Thanks,
275

The two bull elephants which I got with a .375 Holland & Holland Magnum so far, were taken with:
i) Remington 300Gr round nosed steel jacketed FMJ solids (discontinued in 1995)

ii) Norma 300Gr flat nosed monolithic solids

I’ll strongly recommend the Norma product. I downed my bull with a single side brain shot. Bullet completely passed through.

Last elephant I took was with my .375H&H, Barnes Banded Solids. One brain shot dropped him in his tracks!!

IMO, why would you ever intentionally Seek out Ele with a 375? Take the opportunity to shoot a caliber that no other animal on earth really may require.

Remington at one time made some good bullets and ammunition. Not so sure about now! Thanks

Monolithic brass solids from Nosler Solids, CEB Safari Solid or the Woodliegh Hydro will sort you out at a reasonable price. Although you will need a reloader for the CEB's.

The Swift Break-Away Solids are a good choice but are wicked expensive and I haven't seen that they are all that much better in performance than the others I mentioned.

I'm bringing a 375 H&H as a backup gun to a 458 Lott next year for elephant. I've had great accuracy results with both CEB and Woodleigh Hydro solids in 300gr. I'm likely bringing the CEBs due to their continued availability. Both have had great reviews on both forums and with PH's I've discussed with.

Most definitely 350 gr!

It will not make any difference in a brain shot but will most assuredly give you another foot or two of penetration on a quartering body shot, either as your only shot opportunity, or as a backup shot after a missed brain shot.

The elephant in my avatar fell to two 350 gr Woodleigh FMJ solids in rapid succession from my R8, loaded by Norma in their PH line, after I quickly exchanged my double .470 for my scoped .375 with the tracker when the only shot I got late in the hunt was a quartering body shot across a clearing.

This is my solid of choice. The woodeigh FMJ is the way to go for either a heavier or shorter bullet especially in cases which are powder capacity compromised like the 458 WM, but also the heavier companion bullet to the 350 grain SP they also make. Supposedly performs like a 416. Gave mine to my kid and now I use a 416.

To answer your original question, I think the Swift Break away solid is a fine choice. Be warned that my opinion is based on research, not experience on elephant. But I did shoot an eland with the .375 / 300 Gr. Break away solid as a follow up / departing rear angle shot. That one shot showed good penetration, better wound channel than expected from a solid and little deformation. They seem to perform similar to the Woodleigh Hydro, which has a good reputation.

Good day, Slider.

Do you by any chance have any 500NE brass left that you are willing to part ways with?

Best regards,
Boela Bekker.
