338-06 Barrel Marking

I am having my Ruger Mark II Stainless 30-06 Springfield rebored/rechambered and made into a 338-06. Was thinking about having the factory barrel markings altered to read 338-06 Springfield. In other words, convert the factory zero into an 8 and then add another three in front of the factory 3 making it read 338-06 Springfield. Would this be properly marked and suitable for taking into South Africa or any other destination?

You could be setting yourself up for issues clearing Customs in Africa since brass will not be headstamped “.338-06 Springfield”. The official name of the cartridge is .338 A-Square.

I used a Shaw barrel to rebarrel my Savage 111 from .30-06 to .338-06. The barrel was not marked so a local gunsmith laser marked it to "338-06". I had no trouble in 2024 when I took it to South Africa. My ammo was headstamped .338-06 - not that they checked it.
