What is the largest animal for a .340

Realize that when you get there, you are going to be faced with great opportunities at many more animals. And you will probably even be offered deals on taking some extras. If on a tight budget, go for the lower cost critters like blesbok, common duiker, steenbok, common springbok (like potato chips though, can't have just one;) wart hog, shoot (or shoot at;) a baboon. Jackal, in fact take a Predator mouth call and a real good flashlight and get your PH to take you at night. If he has a 22 or shotgun, maybe pop a spring hare, genet, porcupine or 5 :) Do a farmer a favor and shoot a vervet monkey, especially if you get to an avocado orchard.

As for rifles both of yours are sending bullets at high speed. Not always a good thing. So for sure take heavy for caliber, strong bonded or TSX bullets loaded on the slow side. The 270 will do fine, but take both unless you allready have a single rifle travel case, in which case take the 270 and save money for extra trophy fees. But if you need to buy or borrow a travel case, get a double size one and take both. Or bring a shotgun;)

Blue wildebeest have a reputation for being tough. Study shot placement and just don't take a risky shot and the 270 will suffice. Both my blues went down in their tracks but used a 375 on first one and a 300 win mag on the second.

The package I am considering includes two subspecies of wilderbeast an a hartbeast.
Would the .270 be adequate?
With good shot placement the 270 would be fine but blue wildebeest can be a tough animal to take down with out a perfect shot. I used a 7mm when I hunted for what your after and it performed very well and that is only a tad bigger than your 270.

If I understand correctly, eland is not on the list?
No two subspecies of wilderbeasts and 1 heartbeast.
I understand Eland is not on the list, at least currently.
The opportunities you will be presented with in Africa will boggle your mind.
Trading or exchanging of animals is common along with taking additional trophies.
Of course the choice will be yours on what to take, but better to be prepared for all possible situations.

Yes with a premium grade bullet

Paired my 340 with a 300 for the first couple of times, used the 340 from steenbok to eland and a caul lioness. After, took the 340 paired with either a 416 Rigby or a Lott.
For me —never can have too much gun and I do like the 340 with 225 Noslers and a few 250 Noslers.

Is ammunition available for either caliber in country? In the event of lost bags ?

My thoughts...ask your PH.
As mentioned by everyone, use premium bullets (Swift A-frame, Barnes, etc.).
Put the bullet where it should go.
Learn where Africa animals boiler room is (further forward than our North American game, check out pictures on AH, or get Dr Kevin Robertson’s book “The Perfect Shot”).
Practice off sticks until every shot goes into an 8” circle out to where ever you can hit it.
Practice getting on sticks and hitting the target within 5 seconds.
Enjoy your adventure!

Good advice

Given your stated quarry The .270 will be fine with 130grain monos or 150grain bonded bullets. It’ll also be easier to shoot off sticks and from improvised positions due to the lower recoil / muzzle flip.

Here we are, the last day of the show in Denver, it's been a good show but expecting a quiet day today. I will be back for-sure to do this show next year and maybe also do the one in Sacramento California.

On Monday I will be hitting the road driving from Denver and eventually make it down to Atlanta for the flight home.

its going to be a good year!

Hi Rem280, Saw your post on getting selected for Idaho Elk. Do you have a zone(s) selected? I live in N Idaho, might be able to offer some ideas.

Cheers,

Craig
