So I have ended up with a few of these box magazines over the years. I like them, but could never find a source to reliably purchase them.
It has an internal measurements 3.75, so I can built close to whatever I want on it. Well I was down to my last one, I tried to hand cut one out an bend it up. My product was not up to par. So I took it to my local sheet metal guy and asked if he could duplicate it. He said leave it with my, and I'll see what I can do.
He nailed it, pretty hard to tell them apart. So I had him make me 80 pcs.
The one on top was the original. "AWESOME, LOVE IT!"
We'll then my buddy Pete says "Now we just need to figure out the follower!" Well Crap!
So using Wiesner's formula from an old article, I fed the measurements into AI and asked it for a 3D model I could print.
Armed with this, I asked my 13 year old son if he could 3D print it. Turned out he could, but then he says "Dad why don't you sand cast it in aluminum after I print it?" We had done a science experiment where he casted a bronze axe. Well I thought that was brilliant. So below is 3D printed version (R), along with a sand casted version (L).
I asked AI to program a holding fixture I could use in my mill, boom.
This is the first aluminum magnum follower. So proof of concept is complete.
I think this is going to work.
What am I missing?
