If you had to choose one Outdoor Show

Well, to be clear, I like visiting the NRS facility and hitting a couple stores not the city of Decatur itself
My daughter and I attended a couple roping clinics there and visited Trevor Brazile

Russ16, i’m a weirdo. I like the sandhills of Nebraska. the panhandle of Texas. And the western remote part of Texas that most people would call ugly terrain. I think is beautiful.
I’m with you on that. The grasslands of western SD and eastern MT and WY are way more beautiful to me than the mountains. I love wide open spaces. The area between Abilene and Midland is some of my favorite.

For years, DSC was my favorite show. Then, the move to Atlanta happened. Now, I much prefer the SCI show. I’ll reconsider once DSC returns to the Lone Star State.

Same for me. Used to drive to DSC in Dallas. My favorite show. I’ll be damned if, as a Texan, I’ll offer support to a DSC show in freaking Georgia.

I have been to SCI every year since the move to Nashville since it is within driving distance for me and have thoroughly enjoyed attending. I plan on trying to go for a day or two in January.

I went to DSC last year and had fun. I plan on going again this year since it’s even closer to me in Atlanta than SCI.

Depends what you are looking for.
The Harrisburg show is big, but more of a tourist show to me. Lot of gear and smaller items and lower cost outfitters.
SCI has the most big outfitters but also most people.
DSC has taken a reputation hit since the Atlanta move, but if you are serious about booking a hunt it gives you the best opportunity to really sit down and talk at length because it’s not as crowded as SCI.

If I was going to my first show I’d go DSC because it still has good representation but easy to stop at booths and talk. If I was choosing for myself I’d go SCI to see some new outfitters because I went DSC last 2 years. I live within easy driving distance of Harrisburg show. I’ll go if I get really bored, but I’d never fly there if I was further away.

Completely concur..

It really depends on what you hope to accomplish..

If you want to "see it all", SCI is your best bet IMO.. the range of vendors/exhibitors is vast ranging from inexpensive entry level gear and supplies to the most premium and bespoke options on earth.. there arent a lot of places where you can see a $399 "hunt ready" Ruger American and a $250K holland and holland 470 NE under the same roof on the same day... SCI is that place.. theres also a huge number of outfitters from just about every place huntable on the planet present.. so lots of opportunities to compare and contrast offerings, etc.. but.. as has already been said by others.. its crowded.. because its generally considered the "biggest" and "best".. it also draws the biggest crowd..

DSC took a monster reputational hit a few years ago, and their decision to move to Atlanta made things significantly worse for them, not better.. There are still a lot of vendors/exhibitors that show there and they are very wide ranging, much like SCI.. but theyve lost a whole lot of exhibitors as well that walked away after two years of really poor crowds and really poor communication from DSC.. but.. that said.. if you really want to sit and talk to outfitters or really spend a lot of time putting your paws on a new R8 or something, DSC wouldnt be a bad option.. I think the crowd MIGHT pick up a tiny bit this year, but I think its still going to be small based on everything Im seeing and hearing.. certainly tiny compared to SCI.. so there wont be a whole lot of competition between you and other hunters if you need some serious face time with an outfitter.. they will certainly have time for you..

somewhere in the middle is the TTHA show in Dallas that is happening on the same dates as the DSC show in Atlanta.. TTHA is growing rapidly.. TTHA is owned by SCI and is very similar in the exhibitor make up (lots of international outfitters from a wide variety of places, etc).. but so far at least I havent seen any of the super high end retailers or manufacturers show up at TTHA yet (for example Rigby and Holland and Holland will both be at DSC and not at TTHA).. The advantage I see of TTHA is the crowd will be bigger than DSC, so there are more social opportunities, etc.. and I believe the number of exhibitors at TTHA are greater this year than at DSC.. but.. the crowd wont be so large that youre having to elbow your way into a booth like you have to during peak hours at SCI.. For the time being I see TTHA as the "middle ground" between the current SCI and DSC experience (in years past DSC and SCI were very similar in crowd size to booth/space ratio, etc..)..

And.. while completely self serving and demonstrating bias.. if you come to TTHA, there will be a big Bos en Dal party thrown on Saturday night... we're expecting 100+ people to show up at this point (head count is already at 70 and its not even November yet).. most of whom are AH members (a great opportunity to get to know fellow board members).. and more than $30K in hunts and prizes will be given away at the party this year.. the party costs exactly $0 to attend.. and the chances of leaving with something of value in your hands are pretty strong :)

Does anyone know if the TTHA show in Dallas is attracting the African business or is it still primarily a Texas deer hunting show ?

Also are the African businesses attending DSC in Atlanta or have they ditched it for SCI ?
There is a large number number of African business at TTHA and others from Argentina, Spain, New Zealand, and Canada to name others.
This year was way bigger than the first year with a lot more gear and gun businesses presenting. Parkwest has a booth there with a number of their beautiful rifles in attendance.
I expect 2027 to be even bigger vendor wise. It will be my 3rd year in row there as a vendor.

Crowd wise it was quite busy at times, but not so bad you couldn't move down the aisles.

I plan on attending SCI at some point but due to all the politics and shenanigans I've heard about DSC I doubt I will ever attend one of their events.

I'm a bit biased but I think the TTHA/SCI show is a great time!

I'd go to more than one if I could, but SCI in Nashville is the closest to me.

SCI in Nashville is always worth attending. I’ll also probably be attending the Texas Trophy Hunters show in Dallas and definitely the Wild Sheep Foundation show in Reno.
I will be attending TTHA in Dallas. If you plan to attend on Saturday or Sun, I would like to meet.

With the GAOS in Harrisburg being 9 days, that has a big affect on what outfitters attend, not all have the time and resources to spend 9 days at a show. I do like this show, since I am a 3 hour drive from it, but I only seem to attend every 5-7 years, and I enjoy it when I do go. But there's nothing like going to the SCI show and seeing the more notable outfitters, high end clothing and guns. If I were scouting out a turkey or black bear hunt, Harrisburg would be a great destination, and they do have a number of African outfitters. Seems from what I've read I need to try and attend the DSC show sometime.

Hit the nail on the head. I’ve been to just about every big consumer hunting show and the some. Like you, I utilize the shows to narrow down my outfitter choice, and make sure I connect with them and the PH.

@The Don whats your goal in attending the show? What/where are you looking to book a hunt?

HSC - small, limited options and a show I attend if I’m bored/free and to say hi to a couple outfitters/ph’s I know for a day because it’s 2 hours away. I wouldn’t travel here unless you’re narrowed down to two specific outfitters attending this show and wanted to get some quality time with them or they don’t attend DSC/SCI.

SCI - by far the largest show with the most diversity. Can be a bit overwhelming and getting quality time with outfitters and PH’s can be a challenge because of size and number of attendees. I love this show but unfortunately it often conflicts with other work events. I feel SCI has a better non-African International Outfitter attendance. If I was considering a specialty hunt or Asia or Europe this would be the show.

DSC - much preferred the Dallas venue but understand the challenges and reasons for the temporary move. Atlanta last year wasn’t bad, I got LOTS of quality time with the outfitters I went to see and meet with. Not as big as SCI, not as diverse but a more friendly and intimate feel. I’m likely attending DSC again this coming year to chat with a couple outfitters on 2029 or 2030.

TTHA - The January show has been great with a much bigger international focus. I skip the summer shows since they’re a “t-shirt and tchotchke” show for me as big Texas High Fence Deer and Exotics don’t appeal to me, and the couple African outfitters that are there are primarily Game Ranches in RSA and Namibia. If I don’t go to DSC, I’ll attend TTHA.

Great American (Harrisburg) - haven’t been in 9 years but it was large and had a diverse number of outfitters and countries represented. I didn’t see many of the “Big Names” attending this show with the African focus once again being Game Farms. If I was looking for a Midwest Whitetail Hunt, a gator or hog hunt or for a Turkey Hunt this is the show I’d pick.

Western Hunt Expo - This is a really cool show that has a lot of western hunt focus, but also sees some international attention. Gets a couple of well known African outfitters attending plus the usual Game Ranches. If Elk or Mule Deer were on my list, this would be the show I’d pick.

Sheep Show - I’m planning on attending this show again in 2027. Very focused on Mountain Hunting and a must for someone planning a Sheep/Goat Hunt. Lots of specialty gear and equipment for those hunts. Gets some African outfitters in attendance, as well as some western US outfitters for Elk/Deer that also Sheep/Goat Hunt. Asian/European Sheep, Ibex and Chamois guys also present.

IMO if you’re looking Moose/Caribou DSC or SCI are the show for you unless you’re thinking Newfound Land or a Canadian Province then I’d suggest GAO or Western Hunt since they seem to have a few more “budget friendly” options.

Don’t forget the DSC Summer Expo. It’s a very small but intimate show with many of DSC’s top outfitters from each country or destination. I really enjoyed this show this summer and will 100% be attending again in 2027 if my work travel allows.

The partial DSC floor plan is posted. Definitely some have left, but still a professional show.

Looks like its about 1/2 of what it used to be.. 501 listed exhibitors vs a little more than 1K in years past.. but I agree.. Many of the key exhibitors and big booth renters like EuroOptic, Limcroma, etc are still hanging in there with them.. I think there will still be plenty to see there.. and to the earlier point, you can actually get some face time in with these vendors if thats what is desired.. there just wont be the variety (or the associated crowd) of years past..

SCI I believe usually has about 950 and is expected to be a little bigger this year than last year..

TTHA sold out 2 halls both in 2025 and 2026.. I dont think they ever published the actual number of exhibitors, but I believe it was roughly 700 last year.. and supposedly they sold out again this year with 2 halls again and added a handful more new exhibitors..

If you had to choose one Outdoor Show in the U.S. to attend in 2027, which would you choose: the Great American Outdoor Show, SCI, DSC, or HSC? Or is there another show to consider?
SCI no question in my mind...they do so much for us.

In the west the Hunt Expo in SLC is huge. The Reno Sheep Show is probably the most dedicated die hards but not as big.

But it really depends on what you are looking for-
That's a fair question, and I probably should have explained what I'm looking for in my original post.

I'm certainly not new to hunting or fishing, but I am relatively new to hunting with outfitters, particularly internationally. My recent safari in South Africa really opened my eyes to a whole new side of hunting, and I'd like to explore more of what the hunting world has to offer.

What I'm really looking for is a show where I can meet outfitters and professional hunters, learn about the different hunting opportunities available, and get a firsthand feel for what they have to offer.

It's one thing to watch hunting shows on television or read trip reports here on AH. It's something entirely different to sit down, have a conversation, and shake hands with the men and women who make these hunting experiences possible. To me, that's a big part of the appeal.

I'd also enjoy the opportunity to see and handle some of the firearms, optics, and other hunting equipment that you simply don't find in your local sporting goods store.

I'm not necessarily looking to book my next hunt at the show. I'm more interested in meeting people, learning about new destinations, exchanging stories, and perhaps discovering hunting opportunities I haven't even considered yet.

So, with that in mind, if you could attend only one show in 2027, would you recommend SCI, DSC, HSC, the Great American Outdoor Show, or something else entirely?

By far DSC when it was in Dallas. I've been twice to ATL and was very disappointed. It has lost several presenters and I have reservations for this year but considering a cancelation and go to TTHA instead.

SCI I hated in Las Vegas and Nashville is overwhelming but I'm going again this year. Flights and cost at SCI are out of control, but still a great show. Flights into Nashville are limited for me and all require a change of planes which I hate for what should be a 2.5hr trip, it turns into an all day shit show only to be delayed by January weather.

I'm done sheep hunting but the Reno Sheep show is small focused but is tops for sheep, goat, western, even Alaska and western Canada hunts.

I really want to support DSC so they don't fail but things have to change including a more dramatic change in board and management, IMHO. The last year in Dallas when we were told Kay Bailey would
be down for 5 year remodel was a big fat lie, I knew it as a close friend sat on the city council and discussed it with me 2mo prior. When I approached 2 Board members they continued the lie, so
as much support as I have given DSC, it has now dried up to just a couple simple attendances to see friends and associates.

If I go to TTHA instead of ATL then I'll try to attend summer meeting if not in Africa or Alaska. It might be a better place to try to facilitate change they need.

And to answer if only one show it now has to be SCI even with the issues I listed above.

They should be able to fill in some gaps before the show. I was able to book with a Zambian PH that otherwise wouldn’t have been there last year. The move from Dallas to Atlanta was a major mistake though. It was on trajectory to be a better show each year. Atlanta is still a good show, but added a lot of unnecessary uncertainty. I can’t blame outfitters for not attending. The turn out just doesn’t compare to what it was.

From that description I think you’d find SCI overwhelming. I’d choose one of other shows, but I’d look at floor plan and list of exhibitors first to make sure it has what you are looking for.

DSC in Texas also got a bunch of the big Texas HF ranches that don’t go all the way to Atlanta BUT you’re 100% right it’s smaller in terms of the African outfitters as well.

Thank you for the LIKE on my old post. It brought back memories as I lost her a year and a half ago, at 18+ years.
