What is your real hunting distance limit?

How far will you really shoot at live game in the field and make a clean kill?

What is the longest range where you can confidently and ethically shoot and kill large game animals using a proper cartridge and a factory hunting rifle for larger game like deer, elk, moose, etc? This is not your range accuracy from a bench or solid rest and is not from a prone rest position since vegetation and terrain often prevent this shot in the field. It is your personal limit in the field on uneven ground where the grass is too tall to go prone and you have to shoot from sticks, a tall bipod, off-hand? or resting off of a tree or rock ledge? Sitting, kneeling, standing?

Think about what your longest successful shot has been on large game and let that be your guide. I know that our Western hunters get far more long range opportunity to shoot game at extended ranges and as such also tend to get better at such shots. But, the reality is that a rifle that prints 1 moa at 100y from a bench is NOT consistently able to print 1 moa at 300 or 400y when shot from improvised field type rests. The possible exception being from Prone and we are eliminating prone as an option. I know that prone from a backpack is popular out West, but too many times the grass or terrain prevent such a shot. Plus prone accuracy is at least close to bench accuracy with practice. What I am looking for is your personal limit rounded to the nearest number in the field on live game with wind and terrain and with only a sitting, kneeling, standing position using whatever rest you will normally have with you?

I would also add that this is not using a $5000 match grade custom rifle with a $3500 tier one optic. Plan for a factory rifle with typical hunting optics. I have a Sako S20 which is a factory rifle but is wearing a 5-25x target optic and while I would use it for long rang Pronghorn, it is chambered in 243 and is too small for Moose or Elk and only marginal at distance for deer. I can hit 1mao tgts with it at 400y but it is so heavy that outside of coyotes, I never hunt with it. More typical is my light weight 7mm/08 with 1-8x optic. Or my Sako 338wm also with 1-8x optic. My best long range is a 30-06 with a 4-16x optic and that is good out to 400y but I have never shot it on game at that range, so I am not claiming 400y as my max.

I use quad sticks when I hunt, even when I do not expect to shoot over 100y. I like the precision they offer and can use them as a mono pod when the range is short and time prevents proper deployment. I shoot well off of them but my groups at 200y from the sticks are closer to 2-2.5 moa as opposed to 1mao. My personal limit is usually about 300y and the longest shot I have ever made on live game (excluding coyotes and prairie dogs) is 314y. In all my years of hunting I have only lost two game animals that I wounded. One was a deer at 60y with a flintlock rifle and one was a warthog at 247y with a 7mm/08. Both were hit hard. The deer was tracked onto another farm where we did not have permission to hunt and the Warthog made it to a burrow where Cape Buffalo were in the way. What is your real limit?

My personal best was 782m (855 yards) on a "hunt".
I personally enjoy stalking so typically less. But if im hunting a powerline it can be around 200-300.

Mine is 286yds off sticks with a 6.5 Creedmoor at a springbok. Dropped him in his tracks.

this is really situation dependent for me.. depends on the quarry, the rifle, and how well I can get locked in...

I used to tell myself I'd never take a shot past 200 yards.. not because I didnt have the skills to take a longer shot.. but I had convinced myself shooting further isnt "hunting" and I owed it to myself and the animal to accept the challenge of stalking in closer..

then I fought a herd of black wildebeest for 4 hours lols.. every time we'd get inside 400 meters they'd haul ass.. we closed the gap from 1KM to about 400 at least a dozen times.. but they'd get obviously nervous anytime we were within 500.. and by 400 they were running away to gain some extra distance..

Finally after hours of cat and mouse we got to 333 meters (364 yards) and I realized it was now or never.. I definitely wasnt going to get another opportunity this close.. so I got locked in, shot off a pack, and took my time... dead black wildebeest..

Prarie dogs are a different story as well.. I took several this past June at distances over 400.. but I was shooting very accurate rifles, locked into tripods, etc..etc.. theyre small targets.. and wind can create a real challenge.. most of the time when shooting over 400 I'd have to walk the rounds in a little to account for wind drift (lots of high wind and gusts).. but occasionally I'd get a first round hit..

all of that said.. I still try to keep typical deer/pig type shots under 200 if I can.. the two blinds I primarily hunt from in E TX have feeders set up at 130 and 140 yards respectively.. at the 130 yard feeder I've got up to 800 yards available in 3 directions.. so I can see them coming for a long distance usually.. but I always wait until they are inside 200... at the 140 yard feeder Ive got open field out to about 225.. but Ive honestly never engaged at that feeder past about 150.. most of the time the deer come out on game trails in front of the feeder and shots can be anywhere from 30-100 yards..

I voted for 300 meters, just because I feel confident at 300 meters, with my frequent training up to that distance. In case of need, and if I get proper position, and rest, 300 meter would be my subjective limit.

In real world hunting. I shoot no more then just a bit over 200 meters (for last 20 years)

For me, prone position around 400 yards. Shooting sticks with two points of contact 300 yards.

Hunting is not target shooting. They are live animals and deserve insurance we are being humane conservationists.

Wind, tremors and let's not forget the game moves.

Just my two cents.

Not sure what you mean by tremors. Everything else is a number you can compensate for.
Ethics and personal hubting style/enjoyment aside

Body tremors....For me, with over 50+ years of hunting, I cant compensate beyond 400 confidently.

700 and in is in my wheel house.
I'd much prefer to be close but I have the skill and equipment to make it happen if I need. Living and hunting in western Wyoming its not always possible to get closer.

I will preface that I shoot alot, thousands of rounds per year.

Guys that dont spend time on the range actually shooting distance have no business shooting past 300.

I’m very comfortable @ 500+ meters but only with the right gun and circumstances ( wind , rest type, caliber and scope)
300 meters is my comfort zone usually with my favorite rifle setup.( 270win 130gr Norma , 3-9x scope, no dial up turret)

I live on the east coast, my main blind is set up at 15 yards, other blinds are 25 and 100 yards. In Africa when I hunted the eastern cape and I told my guide I would not shoot out past 300 yards.

I have gone above this range once and it worked out, but roughly 300 yards is my maximum comfort zone. With the appropriate rifle (300WM, 30.06, 7mm mag, 270, 25-06, etc.) sighted in 1 inch high at 100 yards, I am in the zone with a little hold over out to 300 yards. If I have to dial or aim above the animal it is too far for me.

I voted before I saw your requirement of off sticks. I said 400. That would be my max, prone from a bipod. My farthest shot that way was 318 yards last year on a pronghorn.

I did shoot a kudu this year off sticks at 250+. I’m not real sure of range. We didn’t have a rangefinder. Could have been 300. It was a long shot on the last day in the last hour and thankfully I made a good shot.

Off sticks I’d say 200-250 for me.

It really depends on the hunt. I prefer to stock in as close as possible, partly because I was raise by a bow hunter. In most situations with a rifle I have always been with in about 300 yds. The longest shot I have ever taken and was successfully in was somewhere around 450-550 on a blue wildebeest. For the most part through since I am mostly a muzzleloader hunter now I work hard to get under 150. Though I prefer the hunt so if I can get closer I will but spot and stock in the West sometimes does not afford you the chance to do so.

Factory rifle with factory ammo, I'd limit it to less than 300m and only if conditions suit. Custom LR rig in the hands of an experienced rifleman, another ball game.

Doesnt have to be a custom rig. If your gun shoots .5-1 moa
Your golden. I have a old 700bdl i use for most things keeps .75-.8 inch groups with the ammo i shoot.

What makes a bigger difference is your ability to math the variables.

Under the circumstances you describe, 300. However, prone with my rifle and optics, I am comfortable at about double that.

My limit is 300 yards. I know where the round will go! Too many things can happen past that including the animal moving out of the path of the aiming point if the distance is extreme.
