Good day AH community,
This is a hunt we are genuinely proud to offer again and one we believe is a real hidden gem when it comes to free range mountain hunting in South Africa. Since 2024, Bayly Sippel Safaris has held exclusive hunting rights to over 22,000 acres of free range mountain country in KwaZulu-Natal. From the accommodation and hospitality to the quality of the hunting itself, this is an experience that leaves very little to be desired. Game numbers are excellent, trophy quality is exceptional, and the scenery is simply breathtaking. It is one of those places that reminds you exactly why we love hunting Africa. What is there not to like?
This is also one of those hunts that, once you have experienced it, you will probably want to do again. While the selection of species is more limited than on a traditional plains game safari, the quality of the experience more than makes up for it. We would particularly recommend this hunt to the more experienced African hunter who is looking for something a little different, with the opportunity to pursue a handful of very special species in some truly beautiful country. This is a species-specific hunt where the terrain, the challenge, the trophies and the overall experience are what make it so worthwhile.
If you have been following the situation surrounding Oribi hunting in South Africa, you will know just how special an opportunity like this has become. With Oribi permits becoming increasingly limited and suitable hunting areas growing harder to come by, access to good free range Oribi country is something we certainly do not take for granted.
We are fortunate to hunt an area where Oribi sightings are a regular occurrence. Daily encounters are to be expected, and on most days, hunters can expect to see multiple animals. For anyone who has dreamed of adding a mature Oribi ram to their collection, this is a fantastic opportunity to pursue one in its natural mountain habitat.
Of course, Oribi permits remain subject to the necessary application and approval process, and we cannot guarantee that permits will be issued. However, based on the numbers we have been seeing, we are optimistic about securing one or two permits for the 2027 season. We were fortunate enough to receive two permits in each of the 2024, 2025 and 2026 seasons, and we are hopeful that this trend will continue.
And Oribi are not the only reason to get excited about these mountains. This very venue produced the PHASA Trophy of the Year: a magnificent Vaal Rhebok ram measuring over 10 inches. We will let you be the judge, but we can tell you this much: the genetics behind that ram are still very much evident in these hills! For hunters who appreciate these special mountain species, the opportunity to hunt this country is something quite remarkable.
The area is also home to some exceptional free range Eland, animals that have earned something of a legendary reputation among South African hunters. These are not trophies that come along every day, and the opportunity to pursue one in this country is something special in its own right.
Eland permits are limited and subject to availability, so an opportunity to hunt one depends on securing the necessary permit. For the fortunate hunter who gets that opportunity, a free range Eland from these mountains would be a magnificent addition to any African trophy collection. These are big, impressive animals in equally impressive country, and a hunt for one can become a highlight of an entire African safari.
There is more to this area than mountain hunting alone. For those who enjoy a good day behind the shotgun, this country also offers some outstanding wing shooting, with opportunities to hunt waterfowl and Rameron Pigeons.
South African waterfowl shooting can make for a fantastic addition to an African hunting safari, offering fast-paced shooting, beautiful surroundings and a completely different challenge from hunting on foot in the mountains. Whether you are an experienced wingshooter or simply enjoy spending a day in the field with your shotgun, it is a great way to round off the experience.
We are particularly excited about the opportunity to offer Rameron Pigeon shooting. These large, beautiful pigeons are a distinctive part of South Africa's birdlife, yet many visiting hunters never get the chance to experience a dedicated shoot for them. For the wingshooter looking for something a little different, this is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a memorable day in the field.
So, if you would like to combine your mountain hunt with some quality wing shooting, be sure to let us know. And by all means, bring your buddies along! Whether you are coming for the Oribi, the Vaal Rhebok, the possibility of a free range Eland, or simply to enjoy some excellent shooting in beautiful country, we can help put together an experience worth travelling for.
At Bayly Sippel Safaris, we believe some of the best hunting experiences are found in places that offer something a little different. This is one of them. Exceptional free range mountain hunting, sought-after species, outstanding scenery and the option to add some excellent wing shooting make this a safari with plenty to get excited about.
If this hunt has caught your eye, get in touch with us and let's start planning your 2027 safari. Oribi and Eland permits are limited, so if these species are on your wish list, the sooner we can discuss your plans, the better.
We would love to show you this special part of South Africa and let you experience it for yourself!
