hay guys, here is a brief rundown of this hunt and how it all panned out
this was a first for us and we had a good chat with the clients on arrival and before the hunt as to how we would hunt, goals and guidelines etc
pre baiting was done for around 2-3 weeks before the hunt
we didnt actively hunt any baboons for a month or so before the hunt
we also purposely just looked the other way when seeing them for the few weeks leading up this hunt, this was very hard for some of the PHs
the cull animals were expanded to include baboons, monkeys, jackals
the reason we did this cull, or focused hunt, was because our baboon population is very high and keeps climbing, they are a pest and cause excessive damage to-food sources, trees where they roost, infrastructure (pipes, ball valves, thatch roofs, fences, citrus orchard, hides, solar panels etc etc)
checking rifles complete all shooting well, we head out late the first morning as we arrived in camp 01-30am
plans were mainly sitting in hides over bait, then following the troop or then hunting for other animals
tallyho does not have much elevation when a long range vantage point over a big bait pile could be achieved. so this was far more of a "focused hunt" for a primary species, over and over
some plans were adapted as the week wore on to achieve success
baboons are extremely clever and have amazing eye sight. dreams of just laying them down with an AR or something similar if just not a reality. but a nice dream nonetheless.
barring all the boring details of each and every day much success was achieved
every client also got to experience something truly unique using thermal technology and i am pretty sure these night vigils were the highlight for all 3 clients
total for the week was around 35 baboons(some hit and not recovered), was this a huge success, in my book, under these conditions.
a couple monkeys were taken too and few jackals
each client tagged on some plains game, both cull animals and a few trophy animals
i think every attendee on this hunt had a really great time, great food, and much camaraderie.
it is hard not to have fun at tallyho, while getting some good hunting done.
i really appreciate the support from the 3 hunters, management hunts like this really do help us achieve our goals of stewarding this amazing little piece of africa as best we can.
much success all round
some pics to follow
regards
