First off I am a die-hard wood/blue rifle guy, nothing better than a blued steel barrel/action setting in a beautiful piece of walnut. I am in the process of re-barreling my Ruger Mark II stainless rifle (building a 338-06) that sets in the original factory laminate stock. I am wanting to make this rifle an “all weather rifle” (and shed a bit of weight) and put it in a good composite stock which leads to my questions.

1) What are the better stock options? I have looked at HS Precision and Bel and Carlson for starters but I am sure that there are others…..
2) What would provide a “classic look” if there is such a thing for stainless/synthetic?
3) What color or color combination would look the best on the satin stainless

My only experience is with Bell and Carlson. I bought an Interarms Mark X, took off the wood stock, and had the black stock with gray webbing installed. What I was shocked to find out is that the Bell and Carlson stock is 12 oz lighter than the factory wood stock.

Given you have the satin stainless action and barrel, wow, there's just so many color options that will look great! I do like your thinking of making this rife an 'all weather rifle'. Good luck with whatever you decide upon!

I have some Rugers in Bell & Carlson, H-S Precision, and McMillan stocks prior to their current ownership. I am satisfied with them all.
I don't recall which barrel profiles the B&C and H-S offer. I have them on 375 & 416 Rugers, and a 30-06 Guide Gun. That 30-06 Guide Gun barrel profile is essentially the same as others as to stock fit. But easy enough to bed the slimmer barrels to fill in any channel space.

I think the B&C has a slightly slimmer forend than the H-S.

The color is strictly personal. I have Grassland in H-S Precision. B&C, I have red & black spider web, brown & black spider web, and black.

B&C comes with a Decelerator pad. The H-S Precision you order it specifically. Both will offer various LOP when you order direct.

I had a B&C on a CZ550 and loved it. Others I'd consider have already been mentioned by others like H-S Precision and Manners.

Too bad GRS Riflestocks doesn't offer an option for you. Their stocks are amazing.

I’ve been a big fan of the Bansner stocks. But they just spin the stock business off from the custom gun making. It is now called Green Heron. I don’t know what that means going forward.

I have or had the following:
Brown Precision one pounder on a Ruger 77R (since1991)
McMillan Remington Classic with Edge fill (since 2008) (sold to my brother)
Wildcat Composites (Remington Model 7 pattern on a Kimber 84M Varmint)
(since 2011)
Kimber Montana stocks are awesome (as good as the above IMO)

All are great stocks. Vary by price and composition.

I am getting an HS equipped Hawkeye that I am switching out. Its the tan/black spiderweb. I will be selling that. I have B&C stocks that I like.

Ruger 77 rifles have some varying tolerances in the recoil lug area. Companies typically make the recoil area kinda big, so be prepared to bed it to make it fit snug. HS incorporates screws that put pressure on the sides to center the barreled action. With B&C, I just wrap the barrel in a few layers of painters tape to keep it centered while I torque it down.

Something to consider with B&C, their “magnum” barrel inlet will fit the Alaskan/African barrel. If you’re an idiot like me and think you 7mm Rem Mag barrel is “magnum”, you get a really easy free float (aka sloppy):

Yep most of those Ruger 7mm Remington mag barrels are pretty light contours.

Remember to bed the bottom metal as well. The two piece system has benefits and drawbacks. I like how it keeps the magazine box from binding. But, the floorplate latch can be finicky. On one stock, I had to relieve a little bit of material behind the trigger guard because the floorplate wouldn’t unlatch. On another, I had fill in the same spot with epoxy because the floorplate wouldn’t latch.

check out AG Composite's, I bought one for my Rem 700 30.06 very nice stock

This. I have had one of their CAT stocks for years and love it. They have a composite and also a fiberglass option for a slightly lower price point.

I think forum prohibits making reference or giving personal references to PH/Outfitters that don't advertise on this forum.

But you can call me. I would be happy to discuss Cape Buffalo .
