Trolling Motor Battery: What Should I Buy?

Hello everyone.

I’m looking to replace the battery for my trolling motor and could use some advice from people who have actually used different setups. I mainly care about reliability, runtime, and getting several seasons of use without constantly replacing batteries.

I’m considering traditional deep-cycle lead-acid, AGM, and lithium options, but I’m not sure whether the higher upfront cost of lithium is really worth it.

How much capacity should I be looking for based on regular fishing trips, and are there particular brands or battery types that have proven reliable?

I’d also appreciate recommendations for chargers that work well with the battery you suggest.

I assume you currently have a traditional lead acid battery now? That charges directly from your boat when the main engine is running?
 
I always run AGM deep cycle group 27 battery for my trolling motor and down riggers and an AGM group 27 cranking battery in my boat. lasts many years and keep 2 amp trickle chargers hooked up when not in use. In the winter I remove them and move them to my furnace room so they stay warm and on the trickle charges on.
 
The owner's manual for your trolling motor should give a recommendation for battery type, wiring, etc.
My Terrova 24V is running on 2 group 27 deep cycle batteries from Runnings. I charge them with a Noco Genius charger. It's recommended to not run any other electronics off your trolling motor batteries and to use a quality circuit breaker. It's also best to use whatever gauge wiring the motors manufacturer recommends and to keep your wiring runs as short as possible. I have used this system for 2 years of fairly heavy use and it has been perfect.

Hi Dr. Ray, I will be in Cooktown from Oct 16 to Oct 23 fishing Lizard Island Black Marlin Tournament.

I have several "slack" days after fishing before I head for stay in Sydney and Fiji.

Do you have any recommendations for 1 or 2 day hunt near Cooktown?

I've hunted both DG and PG in 4 different countries in Africa.
