Don't have a dog in this hunt, but, I suspect a lot of the bad press regarding the Creedmoor variants is due to hunting animals while using bullets designed for target shooting. The Creedmoor cartridges were designed for target shooting so it should be no surprise that factory ammo would be primarily for targets.

Definitely. The ELDX bullets at short distance tend to blow up more. The cheap soft nose bullets work the best for us. You aren't ever shooting over 150 yards.

I give. You know more than I. I submit and will immediately switch all hunting to the killer of all killers -- the 6.5 Creed-howitzer.

The photos were to back up that we really have alot of info. I'm fine if you ignore it. And the state flies us every 30-45 days and has a state trapper on site and we do the Boar Buster on our own.

Well, I’m not exactly a 6.5 Creedmoor fan but geez, the 6.5 CM far surpasses the 30-30 Winchester in almost every modern ballistic metric, including velocity, energy retention, trajectory and effective range. For close range brush hunting under 100 yards, the 30-30 is fine though.

100% in anything past 75-100 yards...obviously. The 30-30 is literally the F4 Phantom of cartridges. It just proves you can make a boulder fly with enough power. The 30-30 is completely our brush gun option. Sadly for it, I'm going to be carrying a double rifle any time we are going into the thick stuff this year. I want to see how that works and if i can improve my trigger work and footwork.
 
Seems to me a Marlin or 94 in .44 Mag
with 265's or .45 Colt with handloaded 300's would be terrific on hogs. Never shot one, BUT have shot 2 elk with a 94, .45 Colt. 25gr. W296 and cast WW 300gr. HP @ 1,582fps works. Same ballistics as a .45/90 BP factory ́load.
The.44 Mag. will do as well or better, maybe.
 
Flat and roundnose bullets do have a more positive initial reaction on many game animals.friend of mine used 180hr. Hornady RN's out of his .300 mag. on out B.C. moose.
Aftrr switching to those, he noted more drops, DRT with lung shots than when using the spitzer bullets. He noted "they just seem to smack 'em harder."

The bullet is hitting at full muzzle velocity and can over expand like yours did. That much expansion creates a ton of drag and can almost “parachute” the bullet.

You’re probably more likely to get an exit at 200 yards than at 3 feet because there’s less stress on the projectile.

This has been my experience also with several calibers. A finisher at 60-80y is a pass thru but the final finisher at 10y is found under the skin on the opposite side. Happens a lot with the Barnes bullets since they seem to be very sensitive to impact velocity.

What bullet are you using?

We use the Barnes TTSX 100 & 120’s in a .260 and they will go through and exit good size hogs 150 - 250# on the scales even with body shots through the shoulders.

Damn that is much better penetration than we are getting. I'll ask the ranch manager what he is using.

Lets give you a bit of education. He didn't say he lost the pigs, just that they ran, and they will. Every pig I hit with my 30-30 or 356, 35 Whelan and up dropped right there. Not the case with the 223, 270, 308. The 140 grin pills are coming out of my 270 a tad over 3000FPS. The difference with the 30-30 and 356 is they have a good size bit of flat nosed lead or a good round nose lead at the front. If I used those types of bullets in the 270, 308 instead of spitzers I would get the same results as the 30-30 and 356. 223, to me is way under gunned for pigs, gotta hit them behind the ear or in the neck with follow up to be sure.

Those pigs hit with the 270, 308 that do not drop on the spot do not go to far, but if heart shot can cover over 100mts and be hard to find.

There really is something about flat point and round nose bullets. They just seem to smack them harder. I have a box of 180 round nose Hornady interlock I am going to try in my 30-06. Of course the 30-30 and 32 Win Special get flat points.
 
Anyone know how to measure “smack factor”

Tissue damage is tissue damage it’s how big game dies. Round nose or not…

We are talking facts. That is the actual results of shooting game/pigs with different styles of bullets.

You are correct about how animals normally die. Some die from the pressure wave sent through blood to the brain when the heart is hit in the right place at the right time.

Now do the flat nose/round nose produce a shock/fluid wave to the hearts? Who knows? Does a flat nose or round nose cause more tissue damage, at least in the early stages of penetration, probably. Does this lead to a quicker death, seems to.

Lets be clear, nobody is saying that spitzer bullets do not kill and that they don't produce DRT shots, they do, but not as often as flat and round nose bullets appear to do. Knew a bloke who home loaded his 30-06 with flat nose bullets, you could hear the thwack 200 yards away. No pig hit by those bullets took a step, just collapsed where they were. Some hit with spitzers would take a few steps or stay standing for a few seconds.

A flat nose bullet sends a “shockwave to the heart” causing the animal to drop?? Really, lol.

Im am sorry, but you have no idea what you’re talking about.

Disrupting the heart or even EXPLODING it has nothing has nothing to do with dropping an animal. The only way to drop an animal is to disrupt the CNS.

The fudd is strong with you.

For 6.5 CM, try the Barnes TTSX 120 grain. It works on big South Texas bucks too, although the .308 Win with a Barnes TTSX 130 is my go to bullet 99% of the time. The .308 130 is an amazing combination.

Tracking in the thorn brush is quite unpleasant. I put the bullet at the base of the ear if possible.

Here is a really big hog I was able to video tape from a blind with the .308 Win with TTSX 130.


Here is a nephew taking his first buck with the .260 and Barnes TTSX 100 to the high shoulder. The bullet exited the offside shoulder.


Here is a vidro of my wife taking another pig with the .308 Win with the TTSX 130.

Hi Dr. Ray, I will be in Cooktown from Oct 16 to Oct 23 fishing Lizard Island Black Marlin Tournament.

I have several "slack" days after fishing before I head for stay in Sydney and Fiji.

Do you have any recommendations for 1 or 2 day hunt near Cooktown?

I've hunted both DG and PG in 4 different countries in Africa.
