Community Designed AH Hunting Knife

I received a call from a nice lady at US customs regarding my knife this morning….
She said they have a package for me that came from Zimbabwe. A country which is on the “restricted list” and the package is identified as “Kitchen Cutlery”
My response was “ok”?
She asked what kind of kitchen cutlery? I told it’s a custom knife..
She asked if it is a set or a single knife ? I told her a single knife.
She asked how much I paid. I told her 400 with shipping and everything.
She asked what the value of the knife, I told her approx 250.
Then she went on to confirm my contact information, which she already had….
She finished by stating that they would get the package processed and on its way….
She didn’t ask for any payment or mention any tariff. Mostly she was just confirming what she already knew, I think….
Hopefully it will be on its way shortly…..
 
Excellent. I would appreciate Hippo tooth handle scales, a stainless finger guard for durability and to avoid oxidation., perhaps but maybe African blackwood artfully built into the handle. Your blued damascus in the blade shape I previously indicated with the deep bellied drop point. I loved the lightning-bolt effect of the bluing on your finished blade! No lanyard hole. Inscribed on the blade your signature and AfricaHunting .com as in your last shipment. Other choices always listened to and thoughtfully considered. You're the Knife-Maker. 3.75-inch blade length. Cross engraved into the pin heads that hold the knife handle slabs to the knife. When you finalize the details, please let me know. Thanks Ross!

Interesting. I dont know why they have to ask what they already know.

And yes, Zim is a "restricted " country. Always has been, always will be. 3rd world and all that

Checked my knife status this morning. Yesterday after the phone call, it was updated by Fed Ex to Clearance Delay - Import.

I received mine today. SN #60 The packaging was destroyed. Thanks FedEx! The knife is wonderfully done! I just wish the box it came in wasn't crushed...

Glad the knife is fine. Am in the process of figuring out a stronger box design for all future knives

I don't think a steel box could have survived FedEx in this case... The knife is beautiful! Thank you.

Ross...You listen and read carefully. Thank you for that. Great blade length for serious work. Nice drop point to avoid unwanted punctures. 150-layer Damascus! Outstanding! Guessing by your previous comments 60-61 RCH. Stainless guard...no corrosion. Comfortable finger notches...upper and lower... for guiding your blade on delicate cuts. I like the black 610 stainless but perhaps Cape Buffalo horn instead? Blackwood spacers excellent! Hippo tooth handle, downright PERFECT! No hole in handle is also PERFECT. Two questions. What is the u-shaped darkened area on the stainless finger guard. AND, why did you choose black stainless for the spacer that I suggested maybe Cape Buffalo horn to replace?Perhaps I will like your idea of black stainless more than Cape Buffalo. Is it possible to have that blued lightning strike effect on the blade? I had to ask! This knife says AFRICA! Thank you for your attention to detail. I look forward to your reply. Thanks again! To answer your questions:

1. The U shape in the guard is contouring, the same as in the knife pictured below.

2. Apologies, my hand writing leaves much room for improvement! I actually meant to say black G10 (a composite material) AND stainless steel spacers. This is mainly to serve as visual break between the blackwood spacer, much the same way as with the knife pictured below:

The difference however would be that the spacer is blackwood, not white, and the thin white spacers here would be stainless to tie in with the guard. Hope that makes sense.

The reason for using black G10 instead of buff horn is because at such a thin spacer, buff horn tends to want to twist and warp.

No worries Ross. On the above damascus folding blade, I was suggesting buffalo horn for the large white piece with thin white spacers on each side of it. Cheers! Herb

Ahh, I see. So then we do buff horn instead of blackwood. That would look great as well

Ross...my confusion. I meant for you to substitute Cape Buffalo horn for the black G10, then thin white spacer, then thin strip of African blackwood. On rereading your post, this may not be a sound idea. What is your take on this. Numbering each section of your proposed knife build will help avoid any confusion. Just an idea. Thanks! Herb

Ok, hopefully my drawing makes sense now. I have drawn an enlarged version of the handle spacers.
1. stainless steel guard
2. black G10 spacer 1.6mm thick
3. white G10 spacer 1.6mm thick
4. african blackwood
5. white G10 spacer 1.6mm thick
6. black G10 spacer 1.6mm thick
7. Hippo tooth handle

Just to clarify some points. I think G10 would be better to use than buff horn just because at such a small (thin) spacer, the buff horn would be brittle as well as get lost. Buff you really want a larger piece if your going to use it.

Also, the knife would be a hidden tang construction, which is my preferred method for knives like these. It allows us to get a full guard on. And a well made hidden tang knife is just as strong as full tang.
