Hi all,

Wanted to start a thread just to show what I'm currently working on or have recently finished.
Some of these will be available for sale, and if so I will mark them as such.

First up, a nice little Damascus hunting knife with tambotie wood handle.

Also made this Damascus recurved Bowie this week. It still needs a leather sheath, but this one will be available. Price including the leather sheath and shipping is $950. If anyone is interested then feel free to contact me.

Wow, how many hours did it take to make the knife? BTW, you should compete in the show "Forge in Fire".
 
That’s a really nice piece, the Damascus pattern looks great with that handle, and the brass guard is a nice touch. I especially like how clean and functional the overall design looks; definitely a knife I’d be proud to carry in the field.

Thanks. There's between 75 and 100 in the smaller damascus hunter. About 120 in the 8" damascus Bowie.

Ross hi & great videos & work!

Educate me please - my understanding was / is that damascus steel was folded & folded & folded some more to get the layers & that it is a pretty soft steel that will not hold an edge for long. What is the process that you are following & is that a damascus pattern through the heat treatment & varying degrees rather than folding & hammering steel ?

The knives you are making certainly do not look like a softer steel !

Appreciate an online education ;)

Hi Charlie,

First up, not all damascus is created equal, and we live in a time where there is more "fake" damascus than real stuff. Even the term damascus is technically used to refer to a very special steel known as wootz steel, although today damascus has become a generic term for pattern welded steel in general.

You are correct, damascus steel is made by layering and folding, or restacking, mulitple layers of different types of steel. The steel that you start off with is what gives the finished product its qualities, and for knife making, we want a hardenable steel, so thats what I use.

The Damascus I forge is made with 1070 high carbon and 75ni8 high carbon nickel steels. Both of these steels will heat treat and harden to 60/61 HRC. So that means my finished Damascus will also harden to that same hardness.

The knife is then etched to reveal the pattern of the different steels.
