Tungsten buckshot for leopard follow up?

My friend Guav Johnson hes a VERY experienced PH so his advice its very interesting
Juan, while 00 Buckshot worked for Guav, I’m sure he’d find that TSS would be far better if he tried it. It is dramatically more dense and hard than lead buckshot and penetrates much better.

I wouldn’t use it for that. I’ve seen it shatter on goose bones. Can imagine what it would do on larger bones.
Maybe lead?

No, you haven’t. You may have seen Bismuth shatter but you haven’t seen TSS shatter on goose bones. We’ve shot a good number of Canada Geese with TSS and generally it goes right through them like nothing else I’ve ever seen before.

Would love to try some out on warthogs.....to see how it penetrates the skull on front shots

Mike, while not frontal shots I did talk to Bryce Hensley, owner of Foxtrot Ammo about his TSS loads. He told me he shot a wild pig that weighed about 180-200 pounds at a laser measured 52 yards, broadside. He was shooting a 1 1/4 oz. Load of TSS #2’s. He told me that 41 pellets hit the pig and 38 of them exited the offside. He found the remaining 3 pellets under the hide after going through the shoulders. His opinion on a leopard is that his TSS #2 loads would possibly penetrate the entire length of a leopard with some pellets exiting from the back end.

:E Shocked:..wow.....unfortunately will never see it this side..too specialised and expensive

Don’t want to get in an argument with you, but yes I have.
Admittedly, far less than bismuth

Now we're talking! Actual experience.

Forgetting skull puncture, if Micheal458 can show us pictures of how the petals on a Raptor bullet slice and dice the internals of a buffalo and make him drop, sick, to the shot--then what will #2 tungsten do to the internals of a leopard, traveling length wise?! and there are a LOT more #2s than petals on a Raptor. That would be one sick, shredded leopard!
Admittedly, that is IF they got to spread any at all. But a solid charge of tungsten would be like a bullet, IMO.

Steve, a 1 1/4 oz load is 546 grain and a 12 gauge is about .72 caliber, so it’d be similar initial impact, albeit at a lower velocity, to a big bore bullet. Definitely similar to a muzzleloader. A 1 1/2 oz load would weigh 656 grains. I expect that the pellets would spread out some as they travel through a cat and damage all sort of things on their journey, but yes that initial impact would be like one big ass bullet.

I think an ideal shotgun and load for following a leopard would be a short Browning Citori 12 gauge in 3” with skeet or no chokes, shooting a 1 1/2” load as fast as it could be driven. 2 quick, reliable shots with a very potent load of 2’s or BB’s. Bryce Hensley told me anything bigger than 4 buck would be very problematic going through a choke as it’s so hard. Hit properly I’d expect DRT.

Personally, if I were ever doing this, I’d definitely want a shotgun since I’ve shot 12 gauges tens of thousands of times and it’d be easier for me to hit something moving fast with a shotgun than with a rifle. And if you miss, it doesn’t matter what you missed with.

We won’t have an arguement, but I doubt it. Your ‘observation’ has been exactly 100% the opposite of what I’ve observed on a few dozen honkers.

I took some to Zim last year and unfortunately we weren’t able to call in a hyena to test it on. Alan Vincent has it, he just hasn’t gotten around to whacking a hyena with it yet to let me know how it works.

Given a former thread claiming tungsten shot passes through geese, ducks, etc. could we extrapolate that increased performance to tungsten buckshot? If no 9 tungsten is passing through birds, would tungsten buckshot end the debate about penetration/effectiveness on wounded leopards? It would not flatten on bone or the facial musculature of a tiger like soft lead. Would it guarantee proper penetration? And who is willing to load and try it? (I think I would...) What say ye?
Not trying to be obtuse. But
If its your followup shot. Whats your primary? And why not just use that?

Like dont get me wrong if i was out turkey hunting and tigers from the zoo escaped and felt i looked good to eat by all means. But i dont think it would be my first choice

Just saying if all i had was a shotgun while out and about id use it on a big cat as last resort.

I wouldnt use it as primary choice looking for a big cat. Or anything really big

And yes im aware there not tigers or turkeys running about in africa.

I will not discount your experience or call you out on this. But I'd be interested in what brand of ammo you are using and ask if you had any pictures to share. Something this unusual typically results in someone taking out their mobile phone for a picture.

What I will do is say that I've shot hundreds of Canada geese with TSS and not seen one pellet fracture. I'd guess more than 95% of the pellets are pass through because we so rarely find them. This includes passing through wings, the skull and the spine. Steel, Bismuth and other blends typically don't pass through and everyone is left picking pellets out of their mouth as they eat.

This is an example of how TSS hits on a goose at 35 yards and flying away.

If a TSS pellet shattered on a goose bone, it was fractured due to some manufacturing defect or freak pellet to pellet impact during ignition. before it hit the goose bone. Especially considering the distances, and attending reduction in impact velocity with which the pellets strike the goose. That is like telling me a steel ballbearing fractured on a goose bone. I would have to see it to believe it, and even then it would be such an insanely rare anomaly, it would be too insignifcant to even seriously consider.

Send photos of fractured TSS pellets.
