What knife are you carrying everyday right now?

A Swiss Army Knife. A blade, an awl, bottle opener, can opener & screw driver. Inexpensive. All metal. Thin. Compact. Unimpressive.

And it's been doing 90% of the things I need a pocket knife to do for over 30 years now. :D (y)

I found this in a thrift store in Westcliffe, CO. The store owner told me they bought it from an Amish (probably Mennonite) guy in town. Although it’s a laminated handle and probably the black on the 5 3/4” blade is cerakote (?), the blade is razor sharp. With the leather sheath for $35 I couldn’t resist.

That looks like it was made from a rasp or file, which should take a nice edge. Some can be quite hard and hold an edge quite well. The dark area probably is scale from the heat treat process rather than cerakote. Leaving scale on is a style known as “brut de forge” and in vogue currently.

$15 at Bridgeport, use my kershaw sharpener and I’ve gutted and skinned several deer, opened several boxes, cut the tops off several redbull cans for spitters and anything else that requires a knife and this little guy has paid for itself 10x over.

I’m surprised how few carry a fixed blade , I never overly cared for folding knives myself although I did carry a large folding trapper for a time until unfortunately dropping it overboard cutting trawl. Perhaps my opinion is skew though as I mostly spend time in places where a fixed blade is not out of place. Living rurally and around commercial fisherman ag workers and loggers no one bats an eye if you pull a fixed blade from your boot, I’d hazard a guess probably in more urban centres it would be frowned upon.

I used to carry a fixed blade (although small) everyday, but I managed to break 1 side of the "jigged bone" scale when I dropped it on a rock.
Haven't got around to repairing it, so it sits in a drawer ....

You don’t see many fixed blades around here, and the ones you do are on the hip of someone who doesn’t use it often.
All the farmers have a pair of pliers on them though.
A friend of mine wore a pair at his sisters wedding.

It’s probably a regional thing , most of us work rope so a knife and Fid are basically standard equipment around the shore

It makes sense. Most farmer’s pocketknives would require serious effort to cut a rope.
I know you farm too, but we cut a lot of bailing and #9 wire. Also handy for nuts and bolts. My dad even carries a few wrenches in his pocket.

Do you guys make any haylage or all dry hay? I find haylage plastic the worst thing on a knife edge short of gravel.

That is very similar to what my Dad kept in a kit box on the lil' trowler he built, it was a 20ft fiberglass bow runner that he built a 4.5ft "whale tail" onto. We'd go out for shrimp, tong oysters, crab & fish .... it was tight quarters, but it worked. Same Victorinox knife, his awl has a wood handle though & an long blade knife my Grandfather made aboard ship in WW2 out of scrap steel. All of that got lost in 2005 from H.Katrina we were in the process of reworking/refitting electronics & he freakin' wanted teak trim, so the work took longer! But he was a master with wood.
