TANZANIA: Father/Son Tanzania 21 Day Hunt -7 Day Masai Land (Natron) + 14 Day Luganzo

Congratulations on the epic safari, very special to share with your son!

Without knowing specifics, its easily over the six figure mark.
Day Rate costs for Tanzania on a hunt like this are $75-80k (probably on the low end). Area dependent they could easily exceed $120k. That’s day rates alone doesn’t count the trigger is pulled once or anything else. Add in the following

• 21 Day Premium License
• Companion Hunter’s License
• Multiple Air Charters
• Potential additional Day Rates for Maasailand

The upside to Tanzania is their trophy fees are substantially less than other areas. When doing a big Safari like this the cost per animal breaks down less than other areas, and you spread the shipping/customs out across more animals. Example - Trophy Fee on a Lion might only be $10-15k vs $25-50k in other countries
Yeah, I was thinking over $200,000 - but again ballpark. My wife and I were interested in Tanzania but she would be there as a non-hunter for a “photo safari.” So no second hunter, just me.

The OP’s game list is pretty much what I’m interested in. Buff for dangerous game, and then an assortment of 10-12 plains-game animals like zebra, eland, sable, kudu, wildebeest, warthogs, baboons, etc.

The other aspect is: I want a one-on-one hunt with my PH, not like some of these cheaper RSA hunts you read about where they cram six hunters together and hope everybody gets an animal regardless of quality.

If my wife & I are going all that way and paying big bucks, I’d want an exclusive experience with my PH and quality animals for the ones that I’m paying trophy fees for.

I didn’t know that about trophy fees in Tanzania. Do you know if that is by design, and intended to offset (for lack of a better word) the day rate, but especially the government taxes that I understand are quite high? I plan to do this very hunt with my son when I slow down at work, and to have my wife fly in to experience with us . . . For a bit before she must go on her way as the hunting is not for her.

Hey Jack…
Yeah… so my cost was driven a bit by Masailand which is expensive but something I’ve always wanted to do.
So I had a 21 day premium license plus a 10 day too for quota for my son (Which I really didn’t need)
But that being said… day rates are like 97k because of that extra cost plus Masailand…
Observer cost of 10k
Charters….Corey and I split but you don’t need one for Masailand…but so for Western TZ
That’s 8k each way BUT…we needed a bigger plane because we had two cameramen And a chef etc
Trophy fees ? I rang some up lol….60k I think especially with things like Sitatunga, Lesser Kudu and Gerenuk and Cats etc…
So it’s a 175k type deal not including airfare over and tips
Oh…tips are a chunk over there… I don’t mind but it’s a large staff ( very attentive). So tips are more than I had ever done too
So….200k I guess roughly all in

So yeah… trophy fees in TZ help balance things out a good bit…
For the top areas we all ultimately pay….
But in TZ… Cats are less… Buff are less and you can take 3 (most other places really hit you to add additional Buff as they charge you for their opportunity cost of the Buff hunt they didn’t sell so to speak)
Years ago when deciding on a Lion hunt I almost chose TZ over Zambia for this reason. I didn’t do TZ at the time because they were known for basically selling 3 or 4 Lions rather than 1 knowing the low success rates etc (which is BS)

Thanks for the follow up.

Sounds like it would be something less for just the wife & me, with me as the sole hunter. Not sure at this time whether I would hunt Masailand but that’s not critical. I was more trying to sort out the gross cost of the animals taken, plus the 21-day premium license, plus other costs, tips, etc., to get an idea of what your hunt tailored to my specs would cost.

Appreciate your input. Thanks!

I’ve never hunted Tanzania myself but know several PH’s there and have priced several different areas multiple times with different outfitters. You might want to PM the OP or @Cme1983. If you start accounting Trophy Fees with Day Rates you might be close. I’ve seen 21 Day Lion Hunts approach that price, and know some of the elephant hunts in prime areas easily exceed that in day rates.

Most good outfitters (especially in Zim, Zambia, Moz, Tanzania, etc) can accommodate a private camp. I had a private camp in Coutada 11. We didn’t have the entire 500k ac concession to ourselves but we rarely saw other hunters. That’s a conversation you should have with the outfitters at the time of booking, we didn’t it just happened to be luck.

There are a bunch of other members on AH who’ve hunted Tanzania @Wheels @ActionBob @LivingTheDream @DLSJR @Scott CWO @375Fox who can all provide more insight and factual info since most have used different outfitters.

To answer your question, from my research, the most cost effective way to experience Tanzania is likely via hunting in the Selous or via a less premium area. I helped a customer of mine book a 1:1 Double Buffalo/Leopard hunt (with his wife also attending) with one of the PH’s I know. That hunt is presently on going, and has already turned into a Triple Buffalo/Double Leopard with a Lion presently on bait. The other option being some of the fringe areas outside the main Game Reserves or open blocks since they don’t command the premium these block do. Everything comes with a trade-off and you’ll sacrifice some stuff but save money. Anyway you slice it Tanzania is a premium destination and a quality safari there will exceed the avg annual income here in the US. For many of us (myself included) it is attainable. I weigh my multiple annual safaris against taking 3-5yrs off and doing a giant one.

Know Massailand is its own unique thing and normally brings a premium. I’m currently pricing a PG hunt just to target those Maasai species, vs PG without the premium species (Lesser Kudu, Fringe Eared Oryx, and Gerenuk) and focus on the gazelles, wildebeest and some other animals. @375Fox did this exact hunt in one of the Maasi open blocks and can provide some insight. Buffalo there can be pretty tough compared to some other areas and you’ll want to pick dates accordingly.

@Rimbaud i can’t comment if it’s by design or because that’s how it’s always been. I’ve noticed most of the traditional destinations like Mozambique and Tanzania are priced like this. High barrier to entry, with lower trophy fees. It’s honestly similar to how DG hunting in Zim and Zambia are also structured.

To not take away from @kpoynter hunt and post I’d suggest a separate thread where you can ask questions from some of the people who I tagged.

Thanks, my friend. Final Q from me on this thread - why is Masailand at a premium?

Let’s just say for as good as Kevin’s hunt was mine was equally as shitty!
That sounds like a tale waiting to be told. Please share it with us.

Sure,
It’s very special for several reasons…
It is a very unique ecosystem with incredibly rich history and people
From a pure hunting perspective it has numerous species either found nowhere else or nearly nowhere else that are endemic….
You have your antelope like Thompson Gazelle…Grants Gazelle and in some places roberts
You have Lesser Kudu… Gerenuk…Fringe Eared Oryx
You have Pattersons Eland on the large side and Kirk’s Dik Dik on the small side
You hunt in sight of Mt Kilimanjaro on one side and the Ngoro Crater on the other…Lake Natron…
You can hunt Buffalo at the top of an extinct volcano and Masai Bushbuck
Huge Buffalo in some places coming out of parks
Monster Leopard….even Melanistic
Kilombero hunt monster elephant next door

So…imagine a Plains Game Hunt that, due to sheer supply and demand is exponentially higher than other areas IF you want the 21 day species on license… now… we ALL want them…but is it realistic for most I guess.

I never hunted it before simply due to cost (especially for top areas like Natron)

I think you're going to have to wait a bit for some dust to settle.

Epic hunt in a very special place.

The fact that you shared it with your Son makes it remarkable.
Those experiences and memories cannot be taken away from either of you.
You will both have those very special memories forever.

Thank you for sharing with us with your hunt report.

Awesome hunt report! I have always wanted to go to Tanzania and get a Gerenuk but unfortunately I think it is out of my price range but I really want to go. I like the tiny 10 and I put the Gerenuk in my group of Tina’s Tinies!

Not to be sarcastic but Masailand is special. Literally want some of my ashes spread there.
I looked up the area and it does look special. I knew that I want to spend a month in Tanzania hunting, but I haven’t spent much time on where in Tz. Definitely adding this my list. My plan when I get to slow down - and I hope it doesn’t anger the gods - is to do a long hunt in Tz, and then head to Europe to hunt and travel the continent - and then return to America. Not sure about the ordering of events, but want to do a full year of travel and hunting.

Not sure what your age is, but you might consider doing some of that before you “slow down”.

I’ve got a coworker that always kind of joked with me about running out of places to hunt by the time I retire or having to work longer before being able to retire because of how/where I hunt. He’s 2-3 years out from retirement and just got hit was a pretty serious health diagnosis that might limit his ability to do a lot of what he’d dreamed about in retirement. I took him and his son out west this spring for Merriam’s to help them with their slam, and got him to book Africa. Conversely I know someone else who’s life was tragically cut short in a car accident before they were 30.

If it’s something you dream of doing, especially with a loved one, you should do it sooner rather than later since life sometimes has other plans. Lots of forum members prioritizing hunts with kids and fathers for this reason. Just my 2 cents

I appreciate the honest input. It gave me a chill because I feel, as the kid said in the Outlaw Josey Wales, as pert as a rutting buck. I’ve been v fortunate to have accomplished what I set out to do, and to be able to travel and hunt all over the world. I’m in the phase of life where I am arranging my business affairs in such a way that I will have a lot more free time in a few years. If I hadn’t just sent two of the kids to fancy private NE colleges, my hunting budget would be huge. In retrospect, I’m not sure if the fancy degrees were worth it, and I’m not saying that because of the expense, or even because I think I got a better education and I had to work construction (and bus tables, and work as a bouncer, and all sorts of other strong back jobs) to get through state university. In my professional life, I’ve seen a bunch of guys unable to step away for love of the game, and they have run through wives and family and end up alone or sick or dead. Each year, I do at least one big international hunt, and spend as much time at deer camp with my friends, who are like brothers. I’m sure you’ve heard the Thoreau quote, ‘most men lead lives of quiet desperation,’ but the following line is little known, ‘and go to the grave w the song still in them.’ One of the reasons I like this site so much is that it is filled w men who have the great enthusiasms and act upon them. I will keep what you said in the forefront of my mind. Thank you.

Dave, I could use both of them if still available. I just picked up a new .22 mag and a .22 pump that they would be perfect on.
