500 Jeffery Club

It's a 24" McGowan 1 in 10" twist barrel. It shoots real good

Mine is 12.

New build will be 11.5.

What is roughly around the average weight of a rifle chambered in 500 Jeffery that is the best compromise between reasonable weight to carry around and reduce recoil?...

Also, barrel length recommendations?
The 500 isn't a play gun....

It kicks, and even considering a suppressor makes me want to puke!

Mine is 11lb, 22.75" barrel

You learn to shoot it...

It took a lot! of time to acclimate, become accurate enough. I'm sure it's already perished ..

That's cruising! .. the lighter, the stiffer.

600grn 2100
570grn
540grn

Norma's 540. 7000ft/lbs. In a 9lb rifle.

Strange liberal backpack. But fits right in the pocket & adds 1/4" LOP?

Did you ever consider adding weight to that rifle?

I shot a couple rounds out of a 9lbs Sako Grizzly and found it quite “painful”.

I feel like 11.5-12.5lbs would be the sweet spot for the 500s.

On the upside it makes my 458 feel like a 30.06.

@Northern Shooter, I certainly did consider adding weight, length, sight ..
The truth, of a probable hunt is becoming more extinct.

I assume keep em as is, if I have to try to sell.
Thank you, Dan.

Following this tread is giving a lot of insight into what the .500 Jeffery caliber rifle really is...a great brutal heavy hitting caliber for sure...

I embarked on a .500 Jeffery currently...will be building a .500 Jeffery on a Mauser MOD 98 action as the first project.
The second project is not that intensive as the MOD 98 build with a staggered magazine system , 3x rounds in the magazine and 1x 500 Jeffery round in the chamber. Building a magazine box designed according to the formula Paul Mauser used to designed his magazine boxes for every caliber build on his actions .

Working on the 30 degree principle of 3xrounds staggered in the magazine box , supported by the follower and sides of the magazine box and each other ....

A second magazine box design will be based on a 27 degrees formula ..I will then be able to see what design is the best to ensure flawless feeding and cycling ...

The second project running concurrent with the Mauser MOD 98 project is a .500 Jeffery build on a BRNO ZKK 602 MODEL in a .375 H&H Magnum ...will keep the rifle stock for time being..while I am working on another rifle stock that I will fit onto the BRNO ZKK602 barreled action when the 500 Jeffery rifle barrel is fitted to the BRNO action...

Will be doing these two projects under the guidance of my friend and Mentor Johan Greyling ...

Gert, if the angles are so demanding to get right, why not just go two vertical like the Blaser?

Hello All, I am joining the 500Jeffrey club and quite excited about it. Mine is a Blaser R8 on a PH synthetic stock and with an RD20 mount. I really love it and despite being 72 I can shoot it quite well. Can't wait to get a chance at a buffalo.

Kevin, the rationale being that if Schuler/DWM /Paul Mauser was able to manufacture staggered magazine feeding system in a Mauser MOD 98 action, it should be possible for me with the relevant research being done into the technical detail to be able to succeed as well.

Everyone acknowledge that the .500 Jeffery caliber round was designed with a rebate rim and short neck to fit into a Standard Mauser MOD98 action ....the length already determined ..89mm ....a measurement the 8x68S also work on....

The staggered system at 30 degrees fitting 3 x 500 Jeffery rounds into the custom build box design formula from Paul Mauser himself...maybe I want to confirm their concept by being successful for another rifle builder building his rifles for himself ....using their knowledge ..

The In-line system is an alternative for sure ...since I am making the magazine box myself, custom build the follower plate as well ..and not using the original items I can return the action/receiver/magazine box follower plate to it`s original condition...

Feedback:
After consulting /asking questions from knowledgeable Gunsmiths including my Mentor Johan Greyling these Gunsmiths all agree that using the BRNO ZKK602 action for a 500 Jeffery build is a waste of a good action... the BRNO ZKK 602 action is better suited for a .416 Rigby, .450 Rigby or a 505 GIBBS .....

I am commencing building my 500 Jeffery on the Mauser MOD98 action.

Feedback from Gunsmiths:
"""" The 602 is too big …you will need to for a spacer /filler in the magazine ….in my opinion the K98 is better.
Hence my .450 Rigby suggestion :)
458 Lott also works
.450 are inexpensive to shoot and reload

Johan Greyling my Mentor mentioned as well that he will never use a BRNO ZKK602 action to build a 500 Jeffery with.

There is no need for a spacer/filler in the magazine, especially when using 570 and 600 grn bullers, clearly these are unfounded assumptions from folks who have not built 500 Jeff on ZKK602 actions or have any experience with the combination......

IvW, you are likely correct. Still I do not think I am wrong in my assumption /argument based on discussions from gunsmiths regarding the use of the Mauser MOD 98 action. I am working on what I currently have available in resources in regards to components to build a .500 Jeffery .
I could have spend a lot of money while I already have a sound action available ...it does not mean that I will not be able to build a 500 Jeffery if I do not use the BRNO ZKK602 action...

It still is a challenge I want to pursue...since I am building it for myself with the guidance of a friend and Mentor it is an acceptable challenge ..I do not use other people`s money , only my own ...This build will give me a lot of technical insight into the requirements of making a 500 Jeffery feed.cycle from a standard Mauser action as was done by Schuler many years ago,

Questions to be asked:
Why did and does WJ Jeffery use Magnum Actions?
In my mind, the more time the short fat cartridge has to come into straight alignment before it enters the chamber the less chance it has of jamming up...

My 500J is built on a Vektor Magnum Mauser action and that thing feeds as fast as I can swing the lever, and I happen to be quite fast on the lever...

Do they work on Standard Length actions? Yes? But I am happy that mine is on a magnum action!

I think that the build of a 500 Jeff has two purposes one is wanting one and one is using one and I fully agree and seen enough 500 Jeff's on our BASA Big Bore ranges. A std action will work but will need more work on the feeding and in the end the longer magnum action just does it better especially under stress fire.

If you want to see a proper 500 Jeff in action @DWB let his look like he is shooting a 375 and does it very well.

Original 500 Jeff used 535grn shorter bullets.....those days are long past.....the norm now is 579 and 600grn for working rifles that is.
404 Jeff same story....
Magnum actions.....
Yes standard will work but the magnum is better...
A BRNO ZKK602 will also be stronger than an ex military standard action unless it is an original Obendorff action built for a sporting rifle as apposed to mass produced military versions......
Yes Mauser actions are good vut they are not the holy grail of actions.....

If like me your 3 DG rifles on the same actions is the wag to go....poinrless having one on a ZKK602 magnum action one on a mauser standard action and one on whatever else.....

Just my 2c having been using all three my dg rifles on ZKK602 actions......

Almost like a Land Rover vs Land Cruiser setup......
I own 3 Land Cruisers.....I have enough other shit in my yard and dont need a Land Rover.....

As for the bullet weight for the cartridge 500 Jeffery, or whatever else one might want to call it, 600 gr bullets are certainly a more modern concept; however, the classic 535gr bullet proved itself very well from the start and will continue to do so, including in my own case. I will continue to use the 535 FMJ bullet for shooting elephants. Elephants went down just fine with it in the past, and back in 1998, when I had my rifle built, there was not anything else available anyway. The few hunters who were still familiar with this cartridge at the time, were above all pleased that the cartridge had been revived. Newly emerged 500 Jeffery experts ask questions nowadays about the bullet weight for this cartridge.

Dave, I could use both of them if still available. I just picked up a new .22 mag and a .22 pump that they would be perfect on.
