Anyone know what the winged screw/nut is for on the top tang of the rifle? Looks odd to me but I know nothing about them
Yep it’s standard Collath safety. That’s not the official name, by the way.

This is indeed an interesting little double!
As with so many (majority?) of these Continental rifles, the scope is unfortunately missing.
That's a tough one to get over unless you resign yourself to never having a scope fit.
It was really a specialist hunting rifle in it's day - set front trigger and scoped which does make this a perfect first shot placement rifle!
I can tell you, if the scope was present this would have sold right away at much more money.

BTW, you better get off the fence; I'm starting to get interested for no reason at all except how cool it is.
Lol I know every time I post a link to a gunbroker auction on a forum asking for advice it’s a double edged sword, sometimes I like to keep things to myself but others I can’t help myself lol.

I’m seriously considering bidding on it but I have asked the seller a few questions and I’ll see if he gets back to me in time. Obviously it’s open bidding so if you like it bid on it! It ain’t gonna hurt my feelings at all, but if you do decide to bid on it send me a PM and I won’t compete so I don’t add to driving the price up on you.

I'm out before getting in... budget blown on other stuff this summer! Thanks for sharing; it really is a cool piece to know about.

With the birds engraved on the top of the receiver, I wonder if this was not originally a multi barrel set as the choice of engraving often depicted the game that was to be pursued? Perhaps a 9.3x16 or 20ga set of cape barrels or sxs shotgun barrels. Just a thought. Neat piece!

Is it me or does it appear in the one picture that it has been sleeved or maybe a monoblock?

JJ Perodeau has built five or six sets of rings for my doubles and drillings over the years. Using a straight tube scope it is very straight forward project.

The 9.3 x 72R was a superb rifle back in the day for roe deer, fox, and boar. This would have been a great little general purpose double for continental game. Inside 100 yards, it would easily handle a red stag with a properly placed bullet. Ballistics are a bit slower than a 170 gr 30-30, but the standard loading of a 193 gr bullet offers both more frontal area and greater SD. I have owned three or four in drillings (still have one), and I can personally testify that it is very lethal on whitetail out to a 150 yards or so.

This rifle, like many without scopes in this country, was likely "liberated" by a GI during WWII. They never seemed to know that a German hunter normally kept his scope stored separately in a leather case.

By the way, the ammunition is still offered commercially by S&B. https://www.sportsmansoutdoorsuperstore.com/category.cfm/sportsman/9-3-x-72-r

Looks like it sold. Someone cornered what seems to be a very fine and very useful double rifle unlike the larger bores that spend most of their lives in the gun safe or rarely cutting paper.

Indeed. The best parallel I've heard is a 9.3x72r is effectively a twin to the capabilities of a 38-55. Both were blackpowder with terrible bullet options. Today, both can be shot with excellent bullets and a low pressure smokeless load for reliable accuracy. Originally, both were 65 yard brush-gun capable cartridges, today they can be 100 yard rifles with good iron sights and shots taken with the judgment of an Archer.

Cool, slim little double!

That is a nice little double!
The scope mounts, again, are a tough thing to deal with but if it’s regulated well, which these continental double invariably are, this rifle on the open sights would be quite a capable small game rifle.

I just absolutely love the flip up tang aperture sight, was that a common thing back in the day?

These pop-up peeps were fairly common on Continental rifles - doubles, kipplaufs and drillings.
A very nice touch and quite usable.

I'll take the Vortex scope cover you have listed in the Pay it Forward thread.
