Flyer Beware! Gun Case Sabotage (?) on ATL to CPT flight

It just seems like too many bad experiences with luggage and gun cases in South Africa. I always put 4 non TSA locks on my Pelican case just as the OP did. I like the idea of taping the latches after inspection but that is not always possible.

I've generally found airline staff and security staff to not be gun friendly. It's a shame as I feel there can not be a safer passenger than a hunter who has taken the effort to show up to travel with guns.

On one trip I was in LA, I was not allowed to be present for a TSA inspection, the guy opened my gun case upside down and everything fell out, barrels hitting stocks!

It's disappointing that we all have stories about things not going well, long delays and other problems. In Europe it's getting harder to fly with guns, many airports do not handle guns, many airlines do not handle guns. Part of the hunt for me is taking my own guns but maybe others are right when they say use camp guns, it's far easier.
Not to laugh, but once when I went to customs to complete the 4457, the agent was carrying my rifle by the scope like a freeking suitcase lol!!

Al four latches in mine were undone between Joberg and Newark but it was absolutely bone dry. Thankfully the four master locks were secure and didn’t allow anything to leave the case.

Obviously SCI, DSC, etc spends tons of time and money on lobbying efforts in regards to conservation, in which hunting is an integral component. Is it possible - or wishful thinking, that SCI could champion the establishment of competent, standardized inter/intra policies for the transportation of hunting firearms within airlines, countries, etc??

I think the problem is there’s to much placed on speed of loading and unloading. Not saying some aren’t the results of intentional damage or attempted theft but I truly believe at least in my case it was simply rough handling. Just like others I know who come back with the wheels broken on there hard sided cases. They aren’t exactly easy on other peoples belongings at airports in general.

From Wikipedia "Prickly Pear in South Africa":

"In 1932 biological control in the form of, particularly, the cochineal and phycitid moths, was introduced and was highly effective. It is largely due to this that, in 2002, there was a tenth of the number of prickly pear left when compared with the 1930s."
We need those moths in Texas. I’ve hunted ranches where whole sections were nearly impenetrable.

They have worked on this as has NRA. The airlines are quite difficult.

Just a heads up. When my Pelican case arrived at CPT from my July 4 flight from ATL all four latches were unlatched, which has never happened in over 15 international trips, and the case was held shut just by the four padlocks through the lock holes. I assumed unusually rough handling. I opened the case at the firearms counter and felt dampness on the inside foam and suspected some condensation must have occurred on the flight over. But didn't fret over it. Later upon closer inspection all three foam pieces were completely soaked and a large amount of water was pooled underneath the foam. Rust had already formed on certain metal parts on my shotgun and rifle. All in camp believe there is no way that much condensation could have accumulated on the flight over, and that someone must have intentionally poured water into the case through the crack created by the open latches. Wondering if anyone has ever experienced or heard of a similar episode or has an alternate explanation other than malevolent behavior. Flyer beware!
Exactly what was your flight itinerary please?

We have them in Texas but they are slow getting to me. We will celebrate when they arrive!

If I'm reading this correctly it seems like the finger of culpability is pointed directly at ATL; fortunately I haven't flown that route to Africa; but in October I have a plane change in Chicago that has me a bit concerned.

I have a Boyt 2 gun case similar to Pelican. It has 6 latches each of which are steel that are twist to open not pop-up. I don't know if that's a better mechanism but I would think so. After reading these posts I'm seriously thinking about some additional security, possibly duct tape.

I’ve got all kinds of Pokémon stickers all over my gun case and anything else I come across that’s not hunting or firearm related. Like a bumper sticker that says “Education is important, but fishing is importanter”.
How does that help a rifle case? I've heard about this on luggage.

it does not help the case but will might make a thief think it has something else in it other than firearms related and not worth their trouble.

I have seen a bunch of latches open and a couple of times the locks were missing, so on my next trip in Sept I will take my pelican with 4 locks instead of the one with 2 and Gorilla tape the latches and locks in place now that you can take a small pair of scissors in your carry on to cut the tape if needed.

Here they are: Kalispel gun cases mae by Native Americans in Washington state.

They formerly made them for Cabela's too.
Have you or anyone else used their “Safari case” that holds two rifles in one? I’m going to bring two rifles on my Safari so it seems like the perfect setup for me but I’m just curious if anyone else has used one or has one.

Yes..? Prickly pear isn’t the same species I mentioned above. Prickly = o.stricta, it works fantastic on this. When you said “giant prickly pear” I assumed you meant tree pear, o.tomentosa.

I put law enforcement stickers on mine, hoping a thief wouldn't go there.

Third safari the security clown at Tambo (Joberg) took the tiny scissors from the mustache trimming kit my late wife gave for Christmas. Hopeless arguing with him. She would prefer I didn't make a scene over it. Damn shame.

They looked rather gigantic to me. Looking in Wikipedia several species of prickly pear were brought into RSA. Some as far back as 17th century.

Hi Philip. It was Tulsa to ATL to CPT to PE. Latches were discovered open and dampness present upon arrival at CPT. As pointed out above, there was a ground stop at ATL for heavy rain prior to departure. It's possible that the latches were opened and the case just left in the rain with the "crack" exposed rather than water being poured in. But it was A LOT of water.

I used padlocks until my bow case apparently needed a second look after TSA checkpoint. They must have miss placed their bolt cutters because it took them some time, but they twisted the locks which ruined the ears where the lock went and threw them inside my case. Raised hell at Delta to no avail. So now I just use TSA locks as to not have to buy a new case every trip.

@Wooster - sounds like those latches were tampered with (opened) and water “deliberately” added to your case. I had an AmericaCase damaged years ago on a flight from Newark to Denver. My case was a top-of-the-line Americase double rifle case, with strong composit sides and the rest aluminum, it was also covered with their custom made 1000 denier ballistic nylon protective cover. When I opened the case at Home I noticed a “gash” shaped in a circle in the Ballistic nylon cover, removed the cover and found a “hole” about 1 1/2” in diameter thru the composite side panel. The impact required to do that could only be done with a very hard strike by a HAMMER or similar object, and the hole was exactly the diameter of a large hammer. Fortunately no damage to the firearm. I was able to find & epoxy the 1 1/2” circle (found inside my case) back into the hole and continue to use the case. Someone certainly wanted to damage that case and I’m lucky they didn’t take 10-12 more “swings” at it. That’s just part of the RISK of traveling with Firearms.

Anime Slayer APK is honestly one of the best anime apps I’ve ever used. It’s packed with a massive collection of both popular and underrated titles, and everything streams smoothly without interruptions. I appreciate how well it runs even on mid-range Android devices.

Between Blak Rock and Pocahontas, I did not want to say that on the forum. That's a nice Cat!
