Handgun Hunters

Just getting into it for big game. Have taken a lot of small game and have used a handgun a couple times to “clean-up” some poorly hit mountain lions. As far as actually hunting with a handgun, finally got on the board this year with my BFR .454 on a nice Javelina.

Definitely put an extra level of excitement into the hunt for me.

MedRiver, nice Javelina! Hopefully one day ill get to hunt and take some Javelina.

I like the Diamond D chest rig also! I have a few of them!!
 
Im gonna modify one that I dont use anymore to accommodate a Holosun dot sight I have mounted on my FAs

16 grains of Accurate No.9. As you know the 420 gr can be pushed to 1250+ fps but that’s a bit too much for me. My tolerance is 1000 to 1100 fps. The .480 Ruger is one of the best balanced cartridges ever developed.

Can’t argue the balance comment. I shot and played with the 480 for a good while. But I’ve always had a soft spot for the 475 Linebaugh, can’t really explain why. I cast a 420-428gr LFN that shot very well in my 480. It’s a nice bullet! It’s too long for my FA 475. But I also cast a nice 410 that does fit. I normally shoot it with 15.0gr of HS-6 at 1180fps. But lately, practicing for my African trip I stepped it up to 22.0gr of #9 for 1320fps. It does very well at 100yds. I’m very happy with both of those loads.
 
A little late to the post, and I haven’t hunted Africa with a handgun since Namibia doesn’t allow it. I have taken 6 whitetail with two of my pistols. The first two were with one shot each from a 5” Smith 627. Neither went far, but for some reason I needed bigger, so I went to a .44 mag, .454, and finally settled with a .500WE 6” Freedom Arms. I’ve taken the other 4 with it, and it is my absolute favorite revolver! I know, it’s overkill, but the deer don’t know that.
 
I took my first trip to South Africa (Limpopo) for a cull hunt last year and only brought revolvers. They were chambered in 460 S&W and 44 Mag and I harvested 16 animals. I was using Cutting Edge Bullets HG raptors and took everything from warthogs to wildebeest, and a trophy gemsbok.
 
I’ve enjoyed handgun hunting for years. Nothing large or spectacular around so it’s a fun challenge. Used a ton of different handguns.
Sig P220 .45
1911 .45
Sig P226 .40(many many deer with this one)
Ruger security Six .357 magnum
Ruger Redhawk .44 magnum
S&W 657 .41 magnum
S&W model 22 .44 special
Uberti Remington 1875 .45 colt.

Haven’t managed to yet but want to get a deer with my .44 Remington cap and ball revolver.

It’s weird but the most deer I’ve gotten with one gun has been my Sig P226 .40 S&W. 165 grain bonded Winchester Ranger ammo. I think I’m at six with it. Because it’s always on me. And I shoot it extremely well. My closest shot was 7 yards and my longest was about 75 yards.
