Easiest Way to make 458 Winchester Brass?

I might actually call PPU and ask them to make a make one serial of the 458 case.

I see Norma is still listing .458 Win brass in boxes of 50. I didn't try to order any though as I still.have quite a bit of brass on hand. Has anyone tried to buy from them?

I haven't. I too have brass, and I thought I had plenty, but given the positioning of the larger MFG, I am re-evaluating .....
 
I made most of my. 458 2" brass from .338 WMag. brass. VERY simple to make .458 mag. Brass from it by simply necking them up. SO EASY!
 
It's not the issue of forming the brass to me, it's the concern of loosing the ammo when you get to Africa and the headstand doesn't match and then having to scramble.

While it might not happen, it's a risk that I wouldn't want to take. And while a person can locate a limited amount of factory ammo, that's a very expensive way to get proper headstone brass to reload. But I guess it's cheap compared to the cost of a DG hunt.

you can do this as a friend did on his 458 B&M that he has to make cases from a 375RUM. He went to a guy that could Laser the barrel after the 458 B&M / 375 Rum so no issues

'Brian, so yes there is a taper inside of the case. However it only comes up the first 1/3 of the case where the belt and body of the case have to hold the pressure. When the case gets up to where the bullet is seated in the 458 Win. mag it would be the same thickness all the way up. You should not need to inside neck ream. I would also say that if this was an older used firearm, I would check to see if the 458 Lott brass fits the chamber as most of the older rifles were modified for the Lott chambering. Thanks'

For plinking, .458 Lott brass is the easiest and most common route just trim it down to .458 Win Mag length and chamfer. It's plentiful and works great.

Fireforming 300 Win Mag or 338 Win Mag is doable but more hassle neck expanding fireforming steps and not worth it unless you're already swimming in that brass.
 
I guess I don't see the simple modification of necking a ctg. straight as jumping through hoops. Obviously he's a handloader. A simple necking up with a tapered expander, load and firework with full power loads, trim and done.

While I agree he is a handloader and not an issue for him. I am pointing out the greater issues if someone want to realize brass and then expect to take it to Africa.

1. Traveling with improper head stamped brass to other countries. Good way to end up with ammo seized in customs and then what does a person do.
2. Not everyone else wants to have to do this to shoot their 458.

I have some sympathy for those who can’t get factory brass, I was lucky with mine in that when I was working at the gun shop my, now deceased, friend (who was the manager) sold me two bags of Norma for cost price and my other friend who was the lead gunsmith there, gave me a couple of bags of Winchester brass that he had no use for as he had already given me the barrel as payment for a job I did for him

I checked buffalo arms, no .458's. I thought starling might make some aferall, they have .50/56 Specer and other oddball brass.
 
BuffaloBore has ammo in 450gr. Solid Dangerous Game ammo. That's expensive brass. Must be some stores in the States with other .458 ammo a LOT cheaper than $180.00+ per 20.
Seems Midway lists that ammo 50 bucks cheaper as wéll as a lot of other makes of .458 WM ammo for under a hundred bucks.

I just scored another box of .458 -while at the local gunshow at the older ammo tables seen a Winchester white box of .458. Marked factory loads, I opened box and it was Rem FMC rounds all factory in great shape. I asked him how much and he immediately went online to look at how much 458 Winchester was going for came back telling me that they were $120 for the box. I explained to him that these were very old and that i

would need them basically to reload, especially for the brass after some talking I offered him 60 bucks which he accepted. This was the third box I got at gun show between $50-$60 a box. I believe this is the way to get brass plus it’s fun.
 
Well done Don. I needed you with me to haggle over the W.W.GREENER 12 bore I just bought, but had to go ahead and pay the $500.00 asking price.
