Easiest Way to make 458 Winchester Brass?

Wonder how they can load ammo without making brass.....

@Don458 that's what Rick and I did.last year. When to gun shows looking for 458 brass/bullets/ammo.

Agree it's a good way to scavange, If you can get pass the flavored peanuts and candles...

What does everyone that trims 458 Lott to 458 Winchester use to cut the excess brass off?
I have an RCBS file trim die and have a 32 TPI hacksaw blade and it usually results in one side of the brass being deformed(caved in)

I have an LE Wilson trimmer but .3 is a lot of trimming with it.

Could you use a dremel tool without messing up the file trim die?

When forming cases that need a lot of trimming I cut the bulk off with a small circular saw, I think they were for archery for making arrows, I made a jig and a stop to hold the case in position and then only need to trim a little bit off to length and to square the end.

I cut two pieces tonight with a dremel and it worked pretty good. Little slow with my cheap dremel.
I wonder if one of those oscillating saws would do it ?

You will need something to hold the case if you use it for anything with a taper to it, Lott brass should be fine. Cut the first one off longer than you need to see how the end looks and cut slowly, you’ll work it out, it may grab as you go so be careful. And don’t crush the case with the vise clamp.

I have set up a 4 station expanding set up on my lee 5 hole turret press with tapper expanding dies
Just run them through the 4 expanders and trim very quick and easy
just send me the brass and pay return postage is all I ask
I have found Winchester is the best brass for 458 win mag
I may split 1 to 5 prices out of 100 usually just expect this I have no control over fired brass
I can also anneal but brass needs to be fired at least one time in 300 win mag for correct annealing .
I can do the same for 458 lott with 375 H&H brass

Probably has to do with how they think they need to use equipment and material. Operation of the equipment is expensive in time and materials. Remember these are the same companies that make the millions of rounds of 9mm and .223 (as examples).

you can get a small cut off saw from Harbor Freight for less than 49.00 and it works ok

This is going to sound a bit odd, but I have used a "copper pipe" cutter.

It can be tedious, and you only remove a portion of what is needed & then finish in a legit "case cutter". When I first started out it was all I could come up with at the time, and I was only making/cutting 10 - 20 pieces at a time.
Eventually, I made a jig/cradle for a power drill & a drill chuck that held the case square to spin it in the cutter.
Over time I no longer needed that as I accumulated plenty of brass & my funding situation increased so I was able to afford MFG "off the shelf" ammo.
I still have the components, but are stuffed in a box & somewhere in storage. I'll try to locate if I can & post up a picture.

However, recently saw this & have been thinking of making a more modern version given the unfortunate logistical issues we find ourselves in.

The tube cutter does work, but unless the cutter wheel is really sharp you can roll the cut edge in, which will make the final trimming tedious to clean up. I started using one but my small cutter is well used and needs work to function properly….infact, the six I have all need new cutter wheels.

Yes, that is why I included "tedious" in my comment, even if the cutter wheel is shard it is tedious. Thing is, I was younger & didn't have many hobbies, partly because I was poor & boring, but mostly because I was poor ... Ha!
