Which would you prefer- 416 or 404

Which rifle do you prefer-

  • 416 Taylor on a Belgian Browning rifle build by Ken Waters nice wood

Last minute been thinking of an Elephant/Buffalo bolt rifle- a couple of options locally available as mentioned a 416 Taylor or a 404 Jeffery.

The 416 would be about $2000
the Jeffery about $3000

Which would you prefer and why?
 
I’m a little biased as I love my 416 Taylor. It hasn’t been to Africa, but it’s taken a few black bears. I used an outfitter rifle to avoid the potential trouble in travel.

Blaser Selous R8 in 416RM.

Ammo availability of the 404J and 416T would give me pause. And a Blaser...because it's me.
 
I would choose the rifle with a wooden stock. Grand old classic cartridges on plastic stocks are an affront to my overblown sense of romantic nostalgia. ;)

To be honest, as a left-handed shooter, 404J rifles are sometimes a challenge to come by. The 416 Taylor has always held a bit more practical appeal since I can realistically upsize a compatible donor rifle in much the same way I made my 458 Win Mag appear. I would choose the 416 Taylor based on emotional bias not technical superiority. Either one would be a good choice.

Blaser would be nice, EuroOptic has a nice package in 416 REM about $5500 now…

Yes, but it's with the PH stock and plain receiver, trigger group...etc. The Selous package is going to run the price up a bit. At least 4 to 5 times that price.

In that case get the standard profile 375 H&H barrel. Load up some Woodleigh hydro’s and she’ll get the job done.

I reload so once set up not much of a concern. I know the whole “lost ammo in Africa” worry but I don’t subscribe to that.

I don't mean lost ammo, but the availability properly headstamped brass will be a concern for the 416T. However I will admit the 404J is better in this regard, but the factory loaded options are limited. For someone who doesn't reload, it has to be on the list of concerns.

IMO, I like one of my .375 H&H magnums but given your choices, I like the .416 Taylor. Raven Rock Precision has brass head stamped for .416 Taylor made by Norma. Graf and Sons has Quality head stamped brass. I bought some Quality brass and I'm glad I did. I am also working up loads for the .416 Rem Mag.
 
I would prefer the Belgian Browning which I assume is the FN CRF Mauser. That action excels in the PH Testing. The .416 Taylor is a flexible cartridge capable of obtaining the magical 400 gr bullet at 2400 fps and tackling longer range plains game.

Excellent idea.

I voted use the camp's rifle. I wouldnt want to buy such an expensive rifle and not be able to get exactly what I wanted due to availability constraints on short notice.

Sure would make for simple traveling to not have to deal with getting a rifle there and back.

I looked at the 416 T and there are no markings on the action- there is a number under the stock and on the inside of the bolt handle

Is this common? What do you put for make and model on the 4457 or import docs?

I have a 375, 416 and a 470 NE. Would love a 404 Jeffery which are hard to come by. Ammo for both rifles you mention will be expensive, unless you reload, and relatively hard to come by. So if I am choosing it’s the 404 all day….its an African classic and will get the job done.
Failing all that I have just mentioned a 375 H&H or Ruger will also get the job done.
 
This is my 1964 Belgian Browning FN CRF Mauser. This one is chambered .338 Winchester Magnum. All factory markings are on the barrel with exception of proof marks on the action port side. I have seen an older FN Mauser with markings on top of the front receiver ring. The number inside of the bolt is the serial number which will match the serial number on factory barrel. For make and model I would list “Browning” and “Safari Grade”. Look up the serial number on inside of bolt and it will tell you year of manufacture. That’s a beautiful rifle and looks like a steal at $2k USD.
