Last 15 years or so with wildcat cartridges etc., the headstamps have never been inspected.
I completely agree in SA and Moz. In Zim the last two years it is crazy they at least for me looked at everything in Harare were the worst not as bad in Vic Falls

The brake on the 404 is either a big plus or a big minus depending on your point of view. If you hate brakes, the Taylor became the obvious choice.
Didn't notice the brake. That would be the deal breaker for me too. With just those two choices I would have rented a rifle for chump change and used the savings to shoot a couple extra animals.

the brake.

Should be replaced with a brake that has external threads, and a nice titanium printed suppressor screwed over the top of it.

With suppressors weighing almost nothing and having amazing performance these days, they should be on every rifle where they are allowed, IMO. It makes zero sense to deal with muzzle blast if you dont have to. Chop the barrel down to however short you feel the need to, screw one of the amazing modern cans on it, and enjoy a very pleasant shooting experience.

Im patiently waiting for them to become entirely de-regulated in the states. Its frustrating that my kids cant use one on their own until they are 18.

I didn't have the same issue at Harare. Were you solo or did you have an expediter helping with customs?

I was with @Philip Glass and @TOBY458 when they counted every round and commented on the case stamp hunting with D&Y
One cartridge at the time I might add! It’s great knowing your whole trip is in the hands of a bunch of people with the collective IQ of a sweet potato. lol!

I was going to suggest both and say the 404J if you need to pick one but the break is a deal breaker for me. Guess you could always chop it off.

I was conflicted in the choices. While I’d love to have a .416 Taylor, I prefer pre-64’s no matter the caliber. So I selected the 404. No matter which rifle you select, you’ll have an outstanding rifle.

Yep. It is an amazing experience in Harare. A box of 20 rounds and they count: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7....... Really! I exclaim "it's a box of 20, see right here. Or you can count ten and multiply by 2!"
This year at Vic Falls airport I had none of that. Easy.

I’ve heard VF is a bit better. I wonder why that is? More qualified people?

I prefer 404 Jeff with heavy for caliber bullets built to spec on a BRNO ZKK602 action.
Nothing wrong with Pre 64....

Vic Falls is so much easier than Harare

Being I have been through Vic Falls twice now they seem to be smarter and more in tune to hunters. Both times they could not have been nicer and more wanting to please cThey seem to better understand our dollars. Just my experience

Just get the R8 or a long action and go for 426 RM. 416 T is just to enable a short action using the the 458 parent

It's smaller and it was just a couple of guys who genuinely seemed to want to get it done. No back room with 7 people standing around. They just looked at serial number and ammo right there in the airport. Nice! Now on the way out it reverted to a bit slower process. They were very kind and helpful but a little slow. it was still better than HRE.

I have experienced Harare and Bulawayo. Harare was a total cluster f$&k with 6-7 people trying to count. Dumping ammo on the floor to count. Taking pictures. It was a clown show. And I had a local assistant sent by my outfitter.
Bulawayo was smooth and seamless. Two people. Both were friendly and helpful. Breezed thru on my own in a few minutes.
I’m traveling back thru Harare this November. God help me!!

I have a .404 Jeffery.

I avoid Harare whenever I can due to both this and the other airport doing a clumsy job of trying to shake down US people. Happened on both my trips through. Always ends when I ask if I can see the local police personnel nearby…got fed up with all of it. Give me VF any day
