The 450 3-1/4” would have been so much better with a thicker rim.
It’s remarkable that a thicker rim wasn’t adopted when it became a cordite cartridge. That would have obviated any accidental use in BPE 450s and would have aided immensely in extraction!
Then the Jeffery 3” (thick rim) and the 450/400 3-1/4” Nitro could have both had the same rim instead of keeping the rim from the original 450BPE.
Missed opportunity there IMO.

@Aussie Chris
The 45-120 is a big case.
My mate used to load his with 2213sc but I don't know what load.
Attached is a photo left to right 308, 405 win and 45-120.

Something I did one day, I had a little NEF single in .45-70 with 22" barrel and ran a .45-120 reamer down it and loaded it to .450 Nitro. Great little thumper, I had poured birdshot in the hole in the stock. Fun little gun for laughs, but that's about it.

A load that shot well in my bro's. .45 3 1/4" Shiloh Sharps was 62gr. of Re#7 + 1/2 a dozen (+) 1/10" card wads to take up the excess room, and a 300gr. Hornady bullet. These shot cloverleafs at 100 meters with the 2x Bushnel scope we put in the rifle for load testing. The muzzle vel. was 2,260fps. Nice load, easy on the shoulder, accurate and exited out the far side of the bull moose he shot with it. The exit hole was an inch in dia. The moose walked about 30yds. and fell down dead.
The same rifle, loaded with 100gr. 2F GOEX and 1/10" cards to take up the excess space to the Hornady 500gr. RN, also shot cloverleafs at 100 meters, shot one after the other, no wiping. I was surprised by that. He shot a moose with that load, broadside at about 100 yds. That bull moose just stood there for a few seconds then dropped dead. Holed through both lungs, same as the one that went 30yds. I'd expect that 500gr. Likely didn't expand much. IIRC, it was running just over 1,400fps at the muzzle.

I am eagerly awaiting the delivery of Gibbs #960, built for the Duke of Westminster, chambered in 450-400 3&1/4" Nitro Express.

I have been chasing a top tang safety Gibbs for nearly 20 years, I could not be more happy with what I see. The rifle is cased and the original scope remains with the rifle.

Friends, if you don't know @S Bertram , he is one of the finest North American gunsmiths and has a speciality of single shot British rifles. When he calls out a Westley, Gibbs-Farquarson, William Evans, or Rigby, it's worth paying attention.

It looks fantastic, Mr. Bertram. I'm sure after it has had servicing and conservation from you it will be ready for another 150 years afield.

Happy 'Merica 250 to you and yours.

That is definitely a beauty. Have you heard about the castings that Leonard Bull had made?

She is coming along. I ordered this rifle from Parkwest in .223 Remington about 18 months ago. It's in the final stage of being built/checkered at this time.

I cant wait to get her.
