When I left for Botswana, I thought this trip would be about elephant hunting and my favorite double rifle. I took my 1901 John Rigby & Co. .450 Nitro Express Rising Bite, and over the course of the safari I was blessed to take two elephant and two buffalo. The rifle performed flawlessly, including two frontal elephant shots at less than 23 yards. Yet somewhere along the way, the hunt became about something far greater than the animals themselves.

What I will remember most are the people. The kindness of the Sankoyo people, their pride in their land, and their genuine excitement for every success made a lasting impression on me. I watched entire communities celebrate not the trophies, but the meat that would feed families. Seeing the joy and gratitude on their faces transformed my perspective. What began as a pursuit of game and trophies became a lesson in community, stewardship, and the deep connection between people and the wildlife that surrounds them.

One of the greatest privileges of the trip was visiting the local school and speaking to the students. Being able to encourage them, hear their dreams, and spend time with the next generation of this great land was every bit as meaningful as any moment in the field. I arrived in Botswana expecting an adventure centered on hunting, but I left with something deeper, sweeter, and far more valuable—a profound appreciation for the people, the culture, and the remarkable spirit of a land I have grown to love…AFRICA

Paul, huge congrats on the wonderful elephants and buffalo. Splendid trophies. Have to say that the 450 Rigby steals my attention in each photo…what a special rifle.

Sounds like an amazing trip for sure. I was just in NW Botswana for elephant in May, nothing along the lines of those monsters though.

Congratulations on a special and spectacularly successful safari. I think the time and attention you devoted to the cultural aspects definitely enhances the whole experience.

Thank you, and thank you for sharing…I was in unit NG34 2 weeks ago. Now, off to Tanzania for a month.

I am keeping the skulls on both elephants, so we couldn’t weigh them while I was there, they should have that info quickly. I’m hoping 80’s but, as you know, it depends on the nerve.

No you’re right, I posted one that focused more on the rifle and its performance bc a friend asked for details on the rifles thread. Sorry to double up

Awesome hunt. I'd love to hear a bit more about the area and how the hunting was, other game, etc.

Good luck in TZ. What are you chasing there?

This made me smile. Awesome that you’re not only bringing one but both back. I’ll have to ask you more about the logistics. I looked at a skull in the camp at Omay North last year, and then when back in Zim at Omay South in April where my hunt started. I was like, ok, that’s not too big, easily doable. I had already spoken to the taxidermist at SCI since they already had hippos, buff and croc of mine…just how big of an order. Not as bad as I’d originally guessed.

Struck out in Zim and moved over to NW Botswana where I connected with a respectable old bull, exactly what I advised I was looking for. But oh my, while I was advised that the body sizes were dramatically different, and noticeably so in the field (and tracks way, way bigger), the dramatic difference in size isn’t as easily appreciable until you are putting hands on them.

Bringing back a big Botswana bull skull is something else entirely. And both of them…you are the most interesting…not just on rifles, but finding ranks on European mounts for sure. Sending a PM, would love to hear if you heard any expectations on the process. My skull was hacked up, but I’m heading back in a few months for round 2…so just might get a bit crazy. Don’t know of any other Alaskan yard with an ele skull out front.

There were a lot of buffalo (huge bodies) zebra, and giraffe. The kudu, sable, and impala were pretty sparse. In TZ im going after buffalo, niassa wilderbeest, dry land hippo, and possibly leopard.

You’re the 2nd person on this thread from Arkansas. I live in Benton.

Do you hunt out of state much?
