SENEGAL: Falémé's Inferno

In French, one finds only poor informations regarding big game hunting in southeastern Senegal. All French outfitters primarily advertise small game and warthog hunting in Sénégal, mentioning only in passing the possibility of hunting big game in the Falémé region, under some generic designation Initiation a la grande chasse. You have experienced firsthand what that is in practice.
That could be. All the returning French hunters have shot big game in the area, most of them Koba and some buffalo. It is not a game rich area that is for sure and you have to know what you get into and be comfortable with that. They have told me upfront, if you want to be certain to get a buffalo or Koba this is not the place in Africa to be but if you want a challenge please come.

If you use Google AI you'll get a lot of information on the ZIC Falémé, the history of big game and DG hunting in that area.

Until recently you could even hunt buffalo in Mali. Sadly the jihadi situation in the area is ruining a lot of things as you know. Sometimes you get opportunities and information on the ground the internet will not deliver.

If I'm correct you did recently take a trip to West Africa or am I mixing things up?

You did an even more fantastic job if that is done with Google Translate ?

Yes I did, very difficult hunting made worse be atrocious roads making it impossible to get farther out.
I don’t think that is possible now with the military take over.

I have another plan/trip in the pipeline in just about as crazy a place.

Sounds like a great adventure. Was hoping for some pics of Veronique. Pity you didn’t bag the squirrel. Thank you for sharing the account.

DJ,
I applaud your hunting ethics for not just shooting into brush without a clear shot regardless of what the PH was saying. Also I am impressed with your patience for the lack of game and the idiotic driving, all of which were costly to you in terms of money and time. Greatly enjoyed your travelogue and the chance to learn about Senegal which I have not considered since taking a course in college.

Thanks @CJNJ , to be honest my patience was running thin and I'm glad that the French hunters, that were with me, cooled down my temperature a bit.

Thanks a lot for sharing your adventures @DieJager! You made the best of a sometimes very frustrating situation !

This is an amazing report and Congratulations on a successful safari. This is probably one of the hardest African safaris you could do and truly an adventure. I am very jealous and might have to do this sometime in the future. Thank you so much for sharing!!

DJ,

Thanks again for the incredibly detailed report. Perhaps I missed it but why does the hunting season in Senegal fall during the warmest part of the year (Jan - April)?

Senegal is in the Northern Emisphere, basically their winter if you can call it that.

Thank you for taking us along on your report. Even with some frustrating days, you stayed positive, even though I can imagine it was hard to do. Wonderful experience, and some unforgettable moments to share with your kids and someday with grandkids.

Now, I know you probably smoked more than that one Davidoff? :ROFLMAO:

It is their winter but also the dry season

Yes, to be honest I smoked only these Davidoffs. I got a pack of them. No variety this time around.

Dave, I could use both of them if still available. I just picked up a new .22 mag and a .22 pump that they would be perfect on.
