When we lived in Kenai our son played for a hockey team in Anchorage. We got to know that road well in the dead of winter!
 
If you have time, consider doing a drift boat fishing trip on the Kenai River, out of Coopers Landing. A buddy and I did a half day float before heading to Illiamna to hunt caribou and it was stellar. All catch & release on the most beautiful rainbows you’ll ever see in your life. We caught 50-60 fish that averaged 18”-20” on fly rods, fishing barbless under a bead. I believe the Outfitter was Alaska Wilderness Lodge and they are right on the road at Coopers Landing.

I've done this a dozen times. It's at the head of the river and in a wildlife management area. No motors and limited access. Beautiful part of the country. If you want salmon, the sockeye should be running. Try Steve McClure. He was the president of the kenai guide association and has been there for decades. He can put you in touch with other guides that are all first class. (907) 262-2977
 
If you decide on an upper Kenai float for rainbows you may experience both… first hand experience floating through a combat fishing zone and get some good fishing in. Literally dodging incoming flies and lures… :) You’ll likely put in and float (inflatable or drift boat) from near Cooper Landing down to what’s known as Jim’s Landing, a pull out ramp before the narrows leading into Skilak Lake. If the dollies and rainbows are on eggs, it can be a lot action and fun drifting beads. It’s not a short drive down to Cooper landing so may require an overnight there if you want an all day float. ??? My cousin has a place on the river at Cooper landing and guided floats there for years. He retired some years ago. Check with local sources about fishing success/conditions before committing. It can be really good fishing or just a nice river float. :)

Also, depending on timing, if fresh sockeyes are running, it is a hoot “flossing” them on a flyrod. Pound for pound one of the wildest fighters in the river.
