Hello all
I have been looking at these two in a Winchester m70 in either a super grade or featherweight. I want one for an upcoming elk hunt in Montana and would also like it for my sons to use later for deer, antelope, mule and maybe someday a moose hunt. Which would you choose? I like something lighter recoiling but open to discussion. I do like the case design and like short action rifles. Looking forward to hearing what you think.
Thanks all

If you go with the .300 then you'd also be set for PG safari!

I’d go with the 300 WSM. Factory Ammo availability is significantly better. It can shoot a wider range of bullets from 150 gr to 200 gr. I also think the 270 WSM will have an expiration date sometime in future. It just never became popular enough to sustain itself.

my first rifle I ever bought was a tikka .270wsm

if I had to do it again Id rather just a normal 270 personally

I would also go with 300 WSM.
Why? I feel the same way about the 270 as @Bob Nelson 35Whelen feels about the 243. It may very well be that the 243 is a better round than the 270. :A Banana:

@Bandera I hate the 243 with a passion and am not overly enthusiastic about the 270. It's not doing much more than a good 25-06.
I'll take the 25-06 over both of them
Bob

Yeah I’m leaning that way. 300 wsm balisticlly is pretty stout and perfect for elk and at range. I was toying with the idea of a 30-06 or even the 8mm mauser but wsm look great! Even the 325 wsm

The 30/06 is never a mistake, nothing wrong with 8x57mm either but I don’t think well supported in the US & factory under loaded the .325 WSM is actually not a bad cartridge but will go the way of the Dinosaur as 375Fox says of the .27 caliber version, of all the WSM I think only the .300 will survive.

That’s if you must have a Short powerful thing instead of a big powerful thing, I’d go whole hog & us the wonderful .300Win Mag or the 30/06 & hand load.

From your choices the .300WSM .

Oh also a nice rifle choice !

Funny you mentioned the 325 wsm. I was going to make a thread about why its not talked about more. The 325 wsm is the first gun I took to Africa. Actually, I took it my first 2 trips it worked flawless on everything. But it does come with a thump.

I have the 300 WSM and feel it is like a 30-06 on steroids. I used it on Plains game in Namibia, and have hunted with it all over America. I have a 270 Win, too, but feel the 300 WSM is more versatile. I had my Tikka 300 WSM tuned into a pseudo-scout rifle as I had the barrel chopped a bit, cerakoted barrel, and snipped the stock just a little. very capable rifle that I would argue is just a bit more handy than a 270 WSM. Plus, I cannot recall the last time I have ever seen factory ammo for the 270 WSM, nor brass, etc.

I had to look twice to make sure this post wasn’t from 2008. Ive used a 270 WSM some and it is a good round but the 6.8 Western is a step up and then some as far as case design and bullet weights. It’s probably a near perfect cartridge for hunting out west and I’ll bet Winchester is making rifles chambered in it.

Dave, I could use both of them if still available. I just picked up a new .22 mag and a .22 pump that they would be perfect on.

Dan who is C. W. Richter? He seems to not be a fan of myself!
