Chainsaws and those who use them

Ran across this video recently. My dad bought a McCulloch in the mid to late 1960s. It was a beast!

If you like chainsaw videos check out Buckin Billy Ray on YouTube. Super down to earth dude and collects mccoloch’s and other vintage saws, he used to be a full time logging tree faller so he is super knowledgeable on getting BIG trees down with precision placement. Great to watch

A buddy needed some saplings knocked down to clear a fence line, as I only have a little MS 461 (stupidly not a 500i) having sold off the 084 & 076 I used to used (started with a 090 my arm still hurts) on the first day used his Husy 395XP as it had a good length bar but it struggled on the good size Gums.

So next day grabbed my other buddies Stihl MS 661, worked much much better, didn’t have the torque of my old 076 or 084 but was plenty for felling a a bit of bucking up.

Getting to be hard work as not young anymore & these gums a crazy hard & huge.

Did all the smaller stuff with the 500i which I also borrowed, man I love these things, they are unbelievable !

Big saws and bigger trees!

Be safe out there.

Blancolerio is an aviation safety YouTube channel, but a few weeks ago Juan Brown did a chainsaw video.

Ive got some serious chainsaw envy now and may be forced to go out and buy a pro grade stihl saw lol..

the owner of the property where I deer hunt knew I was coming out this weekend to do a little maintenance on some shooting lanes and to do a little weed eating around the blinds and the feeders.. He sent me a text on Thursday asking if I would mind bringing a chainsaw.. I was already planning on bringing my little stihl MS180... but I thought what the hell, I'll throw the MS 291 in the truck too.. maybe whatever he is needing worked on needs a little bit more saw...

well... this is what he needed work on lol..

a freaking 60' oak that was about 46" across at the base...

and the biggest saw I own has a 20" bar....

thank God I had a spare chain for both of the saws with me as well as a gallon of gas and a quart of bar oil..

After about 90 minutes of chewing on this freshly blown down, still live and wet behemouth.. 3 guys that work on the landowners landscaping and yard cutting crew walked up on us.. they head the chainsaws running and came down to see what was going on...

they laughed a little.. left.. and then about 20 minutes later came back with an MS 661 with a 32" bar on it...

In 30 minutes they got more done than we had accomplished in an hour and a half and we were able to get it cut up into blocks small enough for a tractor with a front end loader to be able to push them out of the roadway..

I have no clue what use I'd have for a $2K chainsaw... other than over the last 6 weeks or so Ive had to clear 2x trees about this size (but never in my life have ever had to do it before)... but holy hell do I want one badly now lol..
A tree like that would be a reason to miss my 880 with the 42" bar, until I had to pick it up for the umpteenth time. Think the powerhead was 18#, and another 10 or so for the bar and chain. But, it would make short work of the cuts; just set it on top & pull the trigger. My 460M with a 32" bar is as big as I want to run any more. Most of the time the 25" bar is plenty. The 192 arborist saw gets the most use, but it's kinda slow if the logs get over 10-12".

Weekend warrior here - my small saw is a Husky 440XP and my larger saw is a 460 Rancher - will do everything I need done.

The bark is the worst part. Not too far from cutting dirt with your chain.

The 500i only out cuts the 661 and 881 on bars 36” and shorter, due to its higher max RPM. If you run a 42-60” bar the 661 and 881’s torque will outperform it. Plus you can file the rakers more aggressively with more torque. Plus the 500i’s oiler maxes out at 36” bar length for adequately oiling.

But yes, for the average man, the 500i is the only saw you will most likely ever need. I primarily run the 462 which is only 7cc’s less than the 500i, a full pound lighter, and it was on sale while the 500 wasn’t, so the price difference was pretty noticeable. I’ve got a 32” and a 20” bar for it currently, the 20” bar is begging for death as it’s the 3rd chainsaw I’ve had it on lol, when it finally kicks the bucket here soon I’ll be switching to a 25” bar for the shorter stuff. The 32” is nice for not needing to bend over to buck logs but good lord it can take forever to sharpen sometimes. I feel a 25 or 28 might be a nice balance between the two
i too got the stihl 462. i tried one with the 28" bar, it was too short for me to stand up and buck, i am 6' tall and the 32" saw just felt better running. if you are cutting bigger wood, the extra power is nice, smaller wood, the longer bar is nice, so overall a nice choice. yeah, its a bit heavier than my stihl 361 (with the 25" bar) but the power is nice in bigger wood. I'm sure a similar sized husky would be worth having too, my dad did some logging and used stihl, so i am probably biased because of that.

Yeah I’m 5’8 so it would make sense we’d have different bar length needs for standing up and bucking.

I’m sure a husky 72cc saw would be great too, but the husky 72cc saw weighs more than the stihl 80cc class saw. If price is not an issue; no company or saw beats the 462 and 500i for power to weight! Obviously if price is a concern, husky is the most power for the money. Just depends on your priorities. Light power heads means less fatigue, hence me usually running the 462 or my echo top handle (I can never remember the model number of echo saws)

The one thing I personally wish Sthil would do is number there saws close to the CC size. An old 391 is only a 60cc saw and the old O series 28,34,38 etc bigger # bigger saw but how big is it. Husky and Jonsred have always had a close cc size to in there numbering.

Stihl must use the same "logic" as the Glock method for pistols

Mostly just have the older xp’s in almost every size. My daily being a 346xp.
Most saws are tuned slightly, open exhausts; base gaskets deleted and carburetors tuned for perfect spark plug burn.
Though I do run a few “newer” husky’s 450 ranchers etc…
I do have 1 older jonsered and it is also a great saw
They eat fuel but man they are fun that way.

Those last photos of just piles of saws are a guy I know in Vermont who sells parts, so if you’re looking for parts for almost any brand even the oldest of old he may have something.

I haven’t tried the larger ones I’ve got one of there small ones I call it an electric hatchet , use it for clearing brush and small jobs around the yard. The one I’ve got has a 6” bar I think it’s a gta 40 or something like that.

I've been watching a lot of videos on the new Husky 564 fuel injected. Looks interesting. Power of a 70cc, weight of a 50cc in a 60cc saw. Buckin Billy Ray runs a 32" bar on it with no problems. A big plus for me is Husky's anti vibe system. I ran Stihls for years but the vibration raised hell with my hands and wrists.

I’ve used them extensively when I’ve contracted with tree crews. I have 0 complaints they are amazing saws. The only reason I don’t own any of them is the cost to get into them is so high. Sure they’re $450-850, but you need around $1000+ of batteries and chargers to be able to use them all day on big jobs. Since the tree crew I work for occasionally owns them and I didn’t have to pay for them, I loved them. Super light, really powerful, never have to worry about them not turning on from overheating on a hot day like you do a gas saw. But for the average guy on a budget who wants to use the saw a lot, you’d be better off with an Echo 2511. If you have the money for a top end saw, but don’t use a saw often at all, a stihl battery saw is the way to go since you don’t have to worry about maintaining them and changing gas all the time and starting them once in a while to prevent them from going bad from old gas, or cleaning carbs/fuel injectors, etc. For the guy who’s on a budget AND doesn’t use a saw often, a dewalt or whatever battery ecosystem you have chainsaw is probably the way to go. For an even lower budget, a corded electric saw and an extension cord is also an option, but your range from the nearest outlet is quite limiting

i bought one for my wife. i think it has a 14" bar, don't remember the size. i bought her a stihl weed eater and the saw at the same time, the batteries interchange. if i am gone, she can use the saw and the hardest part for her is starting it.

with the electric saw, she can just pick it up a cut. we are both 65 so a light saw is a good thing for her. i used it once to cut a couple small 9" trees in the yard, made 30-40 cuts with it and only used one bar of the battery so battery life seems pretty good.

I will be looking for a set of these when my .505 is done... sadly not cashed up right now for these. :(
Need anything in trade?

what kind of velocity does the 140 grains list, curious how they would fit in with my current 130 gr, supply of 270s. maybe a pic of the box data listing vel. and drop. Oh and complements on that ammo belt, nice.
