Wyoming walk in area N/E

Looking for information from people who have done a diy walkin hunt for Antelope. Using the public access lands blm and others , More for the Time to explore area by myself and take my time. Im looking at the N/e areas 1,2 High tag probability. My question is about the access areas , i have read that people who did this suddenly run into closed roads or detours when heading to planned spots - parking/camping areas . Would the onx app help ? it looks like a fantastic app and Ford gave me a 1 yr elite subscription for free . As of now i have 4 pref points but don’t think I will need to use them in this area. The Wyoming dept of wildlife website is a little confusing. Maybe too much information ? My main question is about how to find out intime about these access points and any road closures. Any other information appreciated. Thanks

1. Unless you draw the unit as a second choice (which there might not be enough tags for that), then you’ll burn your 4 preference points when you draw. You can’t save them back

2. OnX is HUGE when it comes to western DIY hunts. My membership does NOT show closed roads. If you want road closure information, you’ll need to call the BLM office or National Forest office that administers that area. Only way to get that information that I know of. You can also ask the area biologist for that information when you call them. That should also be a call on your list before any DIY hunt

3. Google and AI is your friend. Google the area “Wyoming Unit 1 antelope” and read all the forum posts that pop up and things like that. You’ll get some good info that way.

4. Wyoming website is actually one of the better ones. THey’re all confusing to people who haven’t done it much. If you have questions, call the regional office of Fish and Game that administers the area you want to hunt.

DIY hunts out west are very rewarding and a lot of fun. It’s a little daunting when you first start. But after the first one you’ll be hooked. I did my first in 2009 and that opened the flood gates. Have barely missed a year since. Elk, mule deer, antelope, etc. I’ve had some good tags and have learned a lot and had a lot of fun.

I've only hunted in the SE region, so I can't provide much insight there, but you should definitely get OnX. It makes life much easier when trying to navigate property boundaries, etc.

This is my 3 hour antelope from 2025 in Nevada. I drove 24 hours to western Nevada, sleeping in the backseat of my truck on the way. Arrived in my unit and scouted the evening before for a couple hours. Saw some goats. Walked in the next day and killed my antelope within 3 hours after multiple failed stalks. Then drove 24 hours home

I wish I’d been a little more patient and hunted a bit longer, but I did actually need to make it a fairly short hunt with work

You talked about the tags and your points. So if you put in for the draw with the unit as your first choice, it WILL use your preference points. So you’ll lose them. If you draw a unit as your second choice, you do NOT lose your preference points. But, because of the way their draw works, second choice tags are usually not high quality tags.

You can also buy leftover tags, but these are definitely not high quality tags most of the time.

Not always, but a lot of the time, units that have leftover tags or you can easily draw as a second choice, have significant problems for the DIY hunter. Either low amounts of BLM or public land, or major access issues. There could be lots of public, but accessing it is hard or impossible. The access issues might be that it’s blocked by private, or a reservation, or things like that. Then that means the one or two access points you can actually use are sometimes OVERRUN with other hunters.

So be very careful when looking at “easy” tags to obtain in Wyoming. That’s usually a danger signal to me. Unless you have really good intel or a local source, I’d be VERY wary of “easy” tags to get if you’re wanting to DIY and not pay for access to private or for a guide.

I would call and check these things with BLM and Fish and Game before dedicating the time to go out there on a tag that’s easy to acquire.

I did a DIY hunt just like this and used the walk in area strategy.
OnX is fantastic as stated (I did mine before)
Some of these large areas allow you to use only the little two track roads/trails (you can’t get off them…or aren’t supposed to obviously)
I found them great to scout the area and I found several groups and nice bucks in the afternoon before opening day (next day)
Saw zero hunting pressure either.
I also got three across the counter Doe tags for like $50 or whatever (they were cheap I remember that)
I went to where I had seen a very nice Buck near the very front of the area (I seem to remember the one I went to was like 15,000 acres or something). Daylight broke and the Buck was standing in the two track at 100 yards… done deal…
Took 3 does by 10AM maybe lol
You will do well….internet scouting in today’s world is amazing in these circumstances.
Pre scout and identify a prime area like this
Only other hunters I saw were all “road hunters” driving around looking for something right off the road on BLM.

We did that in SW Wyoming last year. We had no issues with closed roads, etc but did go through quite a few gates on public 2 tracks in BLM land. Tons of fun.
